There are no lens caps, but there is a case. The closest focus is about 16 feet. I didn't physically compare the two. As 8x is quite easy to hold steady I think 10x would be fine. I'd seriously consider a compact pair of binoculars as well.

Is this a fixed scope?

It is fixed magnification (8x). It does not have a zoom function. It is a good monocular as it has a larger than usual objective lens size (36 mm) which allows more light in which helps with picture clarity. It is rugged but not too bulky or heavy.

Does this monocular have a ranging reticle ?

No not on this model. It is a superb piece of kit though.
