The classic story from Roald Dahl, about an exceptional young girl with extraordinary powers. Adapted into a Tony Award-winning Broadway musical and a Netflix film! Matilda is a sweet, exceptional young girl, but her parents think she's just a nuisance. She expects school to be different but there she has to face Miss Trunchbull, a menacing, kid-hating headmistress. When Matilda is attacked by the Trunchbull she suddenly discovers she has a remarkable power with which to fight back. It'll take a superhuman genius to give Miss Trunchbull what she deserves and Matilda may be just the one to do it! Here is Roald Dahl's original novel of a little girl with extraordinary powers. This much-loved story has recently been made into a wonderful new musical, adapted by Dennis Kelly with music and lyrics by Tim Minchin. Review: Great book to pass on to the next generation - I read this to my two daughter they were 4 and 9 years old at the time and we really enjoyed it at times I had to stop reading and we would laugh and laugh, so I bought the book for my daughter to read to her 5 year old son and she was able to experience the same with him. Great book for generations Review: Great read - Read it to my four year old boy before bed. He enjoyed it and so did i. We will end up watching the movie next.

Great story teller!
This is a book I hope girls of all ages find time to read. Roald Dahl is a topnotch author, but he is more of a deep thinker! He was well travelled, he himself experienced so many interesting ups and downs. He used words as simple as possible to tell more than just stories. Through his writing, he shares principles, he shows moral qualities, he guides readers by making smart choices not throwing some blunt actions. To me, the most meaningful aspect of his writing is how to bring seemingly dull moments in life to vivd pictures.

Matilda and Miss Honey are definitely overcomers. Despite all odds they not only persevere they manage without bitterness and find joy.

Imperfectly Perfect
Okay, first off I don't know why it's taken me so long to read MATILDA. My only excuse? There are a lot of great middle grade books out there. However, every time I watch the Danny DeVito film version I promise myself I will read the book. So now I have. Did I enjoy it? Absolutely. I love Roald Dahl's whimsically fun voice. Is MATILDA perfect? Absolutely not. I know I am treading on hallowed ground with some people, and to those people I extend my heartfelt apologies, but for me MATILDA does have a few issues. The dialog is often stilted and unrealistic. Yes, I know it's a fantasy, but the characters should still speak like real human beings. The writing style is overly simplistic for today's middle grade reader, although I am certain it was appropriate for its time. It seems to have multiple antagonists. You think it's her father at first, then later on its the Trunchbull. Matilda's goal early on is ill-defined, and there is no central goal throughout the book. And finally, the ending is too abrupt for my taste. I would have loved for there to be a "...and they lived happily ever after...", or some such thing. As for the Matilda herself, I loved her character, but do we really want to teach kids that it is all right to take revenge on their parents if their parents do something they don't like? Yes, she had terrible parents, but that's poor justification. For all of these reasons I gave it four stars and not five, but I still thoroughly enjoyed it. It is fun and funny, heartwarming and touching. Is it perfect? No. But I'll take a billion imperfectly perfect books just like it.

A Heart-wrenching Tale With a Happy Ending
I have tried to get through Matilda, the movie (the original), and I was not engaged enough to find it interesting. I have yet to view the most recent adaptation, and I do not think I will. However, the book is superb! I expected nothing less from Roald Dahl and his eccentric ways of introducing characters and tying a reader to this story instantly. One moment, I thought I knew what would take place and the next moment, I was pleasantly surprised. Matilda is an empathetic, sweet, overly-intelligent, and compact grown-up who catches on quickly. She doesn't seem much like a child at all. And the adults in her life are all soulless, foul human beings--save for Ms. Jenny Honey. I wanted so badly for Ms. Trunchbull, the Headmistress of Matilda's school, to get her comeuppance, and when she did, I was elated! No child should experience what the children of that school endured by the abusive actions of the vulgar and heartless, Trunchbull. This is a captivating story of patience, resilience, determination, application of simple powers, and love. And when there's love, there's always a way. The ending is the cherry on top of the cake. And it brings the story together phenomenally. If you haven't read Matilda, I urge you to do so, and soon. You won't regret it.

Nostalgic and relaxing read
Classic story, short chapters, easy to read and the movie follows the book pretty close. I don’t like convoluted writing. I appreciate the symmetry between literature and film because, personally, it’s more enjoyable to read this way. It also makes it easier to pick up on the slight differences and decide which way you prefer the story to be told. I did prefer the movie version of this story but that takes nothing away from the book. Films are sometimes really good at combining details/characters, omitting excessive fluff or just portraying certain events in a more digestible manner to make the story smoother when watching it, but while reading it, it can sometimes be nice to get the extra bits sorted out. Plenty of quotes will transport you right to the scenes in the movie. I love that because it’s more entertaining to visualize the story in a familiar way as I’m reading. Definitely think this book should be read at least once in your life whether you’re reading it as a child or an an adult.

Génial
En cours de perfectionnement en anglais, j'ai décidé de lire des livres pour enfants pour faciliter l'apprentissage du vocabulaire. Un livre accessible et terriblement drôle. À lire même adulte.

A great classic!
This is a great classic story for any child or even adult to read. Matilda is a well written and handled story about abuse, justice, education, love, and power. The writing is quite clever and funny despite some darker themes: Matilda is an intelligent young girl who is mistreated and neglected by her family. Her new school headmistresses is also a cruel and abusive woman. Matilda uses her brilliant mind and new telekinetic powers to fight back against these abusers and get justice for herself and others.

I bought this book for the daughter of a friend of mine because it was one of my favourite books growing up. I don't really know if she enjoyed it or not though.
