The winding knob takes a bashing if used often, I spray a little grease behind it to help prevent it from wearing out. The metal stand is solid and has a good non-slip handle. There is a thermal cut-out for safety since you do not always need to unwind the full reel and when there is a lot of cable left wound on when in use it produces heat. It has never cut out on me so far from light to medium use. The cable seems reinforced with a thick coating, much better than a domestic extension cord. The cables will be 1.5 so putting more than 3000w would cause a fire risk. Be careful with electricity. **Q: Does the cable have to be fully unwound when in use?** A: It depends on how much current you want to put through it. It tells you on the reel itself what is the safe load - unwound = 13A / 3120W : wound = 5A / 1200W **Q: Also, do we have to take into account electrical items like a power tools surge or spiking and do we have to double the tools wattage outputs etc etc?** A: Passing electricity thru a cable causes heat, the greater the load the more heat created. Power surge and spiking should be considerd however small surges and spikes should not cause damaged (heat) to a wound cable on a reel providing the load isn't greater than the maximum load (960w).
