It claims that it is "mess free" when changing the date and I marked it down as it is only "mess free" if you are exceedingly careful when holding the stamp guard and maneuvering the date. It works great, but I have gotten some ink on my hands with every date change, and I have been careful. Mostly it is at the finger/thumb tip where one holds the guard and the active part of the stamp.
