I got this following a collapsed lung as a result of an accident. It is worth while buying, not as good as a similar machine I was supplied with in hospital, where three balls had t be maintained between two lines on the tubes and I stupidly left behind. It is important to wash the mouth piece /tube and dry them thoroughly cf Bagpipe Lung. The adjustable breathing exerciser available from Amazon is good too. WAshing & drying appplies too. However if you believe there is a specific need for the 5 year old in question to use it, then I can only advise that you seek a medical opinion.
