Fantastic album I love it when an artist plays against type. This album may by a little rock/country in sound but it still retains a dance beat. I would really highly recommend this album, it's my favourite of her.

If I say that some of my favourite Gaga tracks to date are Speechless, Teeth, Again Again, You and I, and Dope, I guess it won't surprise you that I love this album. From the beginning, I've understood that Gaga is a fashion-loving disco star, and she loves pulsing beats and anthemic dance tracks. However, I think she's often at her best when everything else is dialed down and that bloody gorgeous husky-silky voice of hers is allowed to shine. When this lady belts it out, oh boy - does she belt it out. Her voice will raise the hairs on the back of your arm and make you fall in love. And finally, the album I have been wishing for has arrived: pure, raw Gaga at her finest; no up tempo dance tracks (except perhaps Perfect Illusion, which is still somehow quieter than her usual Bad Romances and Telephones...) just voice, and lyric, and melody. I got Joanne this morning, and have played it through three time now. Immediately a few songs stand out: Ayo - ridiculously sassy, hip-swaying, toe-tapping, countrifed Gaga. This one's catchy. Joanne - the standout titular track, this song is utterly, perfectly beautiful. It is a meditation on watching somebody you love die, and I'm not embarrassed to say that it brought me very near tears the first time I heard it. I think the most exquisite thing about it is how very small and understated it is, yet has immense power and bravery in the simple lyrics and sweetly crooned delivery. Reminds me a little of Oasis's Let There Be Love - songs don't always have to be belt-em-out power ballads to strike you through the heart. It's unlike anything Gaga has ever done, and yet somehow fits her perfectly. Million Reasons - a bit more power-ballady than Joanne, yet nonetheless very raw and beautiful. Sinner's Prayer - another tune with a catchy country twang Come to Mama - Gaga asks why the heck we don't have world peace, and why is everyone arguing when we should all just love and respect each other? It's a gorgeous, cheeky, cheerful, cinematic track and by the time the saxophone starts up at the end it reminded me of Darlene Love's Alone on Christmas, played in Home Alone 2 Angel Down - another low key, sorrowful track showcasing Gaga's sweet velvety voice that can somehow pluck out emotions you didn't know you had. I love this lady and hope she continues to make whatever music makes her happy. The sound may be a little different and put off fans of Gaga's more hardcore club-filling tracks like Judas and Bad Romance, but if you've loved her all along for her voice and her talent, you will find nothing amiss here. Wonderfully sweet.

Amazing album by Lady Gaga. This album is some of Lady gaga’s best work. Each song is a classic and is different to the usual dance/pop tracks we are used too by her. The whole album really shows off her songwriting skills and her powerful voice. Its like Classic Lady Gaga with a hint of country. Some of my favourites are sinners prayer, angle down and John Wayne. This double vinyl is presented beautifully and a must have for my collection. Great album cannot fault it. I hope she creates another album in this more country style again. Highly recommended.

Having never owned an album by Lady GaGa before I was completely blown away by this . There isn’t a weak song in this, each song has a catchy melody and verse. I think it’s a triumphant album personally, because it uses her voice to its fullest potential. I especially love A Million Reasons. It’s worth a listen and I would recommend it to anyone.

If you are used to GaGa as a pop diva then this album will come as a bit of a shock - it is very Country inspired but is still impressive nonetheless. I found the title track (Joanne) a little sad but the majority will have you tapping along with them in no time!

Listen to this album on Amazon Prime. I'm just astounded that there are people who have given this album 1 or 2 stars. What do they want? Maybe an artist who is so wacky that she becomes tedious! Anyone thinking of buying this album needs to understand that this is Lady Gaga setting aside all the nonsense in the past (obviously she has produced some great stuff during the nonsense period) and proved to me, and I suspect a lot of people, that she is a damn good singer. There is a lot of emotion in this album including in the title track where she sings about an aunt who passed away from a chronic disease (see photo). This song is incredible with emotion that few artists are able to express. Other tracks...every single song in this album is great...however some really stand out. Joanne (already mentioned). Million Reasons...if she has sung a better ballad I certainly haven't heard it. Angel Down, another superb ballad, John Wayne, great track with really funny start (shouts a little like my wife!), Grigio Girls....if you down like this track there is something wrong!!! So again, how some people have given this 1 or 2 stars is a mystery. It is NOT the Lady Gaga we know...but rather an artist who has peeled everything back to show off an incredible voice. I might be wrong, but this album will eventually be considered one of the greats.

Good quality with prompt delivery

I've waited a long time for this moment to arrive, and as usual, I am impressed with her ability to captivate the minds (and ears) of the millions of people who love to listen to her raw and brutally honest lyrics. Gaga is one of the few artists in this industry who truly speaks from the heart, and you can clearly feel it as you listen to this. I do think this album is her most personal to date, as well as more simple but that's not a bad thing! Also, it was beautiful of her to include precious family photos in the booklet and dedicate the album to her late Aunt, it puts a lovely touch to the whole thing, not many would do that so it reminds us that she's human like the rest of us and puts her all into the work she creates. 5 stars from me!

Very good album

Comme à chaque album de Lady Gaga, je pars avec un a priori négatif étrange. La médiatisation de ses outrances passées a contribué à façonner une image un peu négative de la chanteuse. Je n'ai d'abord écouté "Joanne" que par curiosité, comme pour chacun des précédents opus. Or, à chaque fois, c'est la même claque. Très différent des précédents, cet album permet de mesurer la puissance de la voix de la chanteuse, puissance organique mais aussi forte capacité à transmettre des émotions authentiques, à mille lieues de l'image superficielle que l'on a de Lady Gaga. Chaque chanson est excellente, servie par des instrumentaux de qualité qui accompagnent la voix, sont à son service, de façon beaucoup plus notable que pour les premiers albums, où les instrumentaux à eux seuls suffisaient à combler l'auditeur. Petite préférence personnelle pour "Angel down", la dernière des chansons de l'album, mais le choix entre toutes est cornélien tant elles ont chacune leur charme.

--- Inhalt & Kritik --- Als Lady Gaga drei Jahre nach ihrem letzten Album ARTPOP ein neues Werk mit der Auskopplung PERFECT ILLUSION angekündigt hat, war ich zuerst irritiert. Die Sängerin, die mittlerweile auch als Schauspielerin in der US-Serie AMERICAN HORROR STORY tätig ist, dafür einen Golden Globe eingestrichen und ihre Wandlungsfähigkeit unter Beweis stellte, lässt einen Song auf die Menge los, der keinerlei Weiterentwicklung zeigt. PERFECT ILLUSION klingt wie eine aufgewärmte Idee für eines ihrer Vorgängeralben, Plastik-Pop von der banalen Art über eine vergangene Liebe. Das hatten wir doch schon einmal besser... Im Kontext mit dem dazugehörigen Longplayer JOANNE kann man aber Entwarnung geben, denn er ist fernab jeglicher Vorstellung, die man durch PERFECT ILLUSION gewinnen könnte. Klanglich ist es eher in die Sparte Indie-Pop mit Rock- (kraftvoll: JOHN WAYNE) und Akustikanleihen (wunderschön: JOANNE und SINNER'S PRAYER) einzuordnen, in denen Lady Gaga ihre Fähigkeiten als Sängerin richtig ausloten kann. Wer sie zuvor noch nie live erlebt hat, dem muss ich einfach sagen: Die Frau kann singen... und WIE! Die gefühlvolle Ballade MILLION REASONS kann es vom Gänsehautpegel durchaus mit dem rührseligen DOPE von ARTPOP aufnehmen. Obwohl Balladen bei ihr immer schon hoch im Kurs standen, so unterscheidet sich die bodenständige Ausrichtung von JOANNE von allem, was Lady Gaga davor veröffentlicht hat. Damit will ich das bisherige Schaffen nicht schlecht machen, ich bin seit den FAME-Zeiten im Jahr 2008 Fan dieses exzentrischen Stars, bei welchem die publikumswirksame Präsentation ihrer Songs und die sexuelle Selbstverwirklichung immer im Vordergrund standen. Dagegen wirkt das Album JOANNE, das den Namen von Gagas verstorbener Tante trägt, um eine auf Authentizität bemühte Dimension reicher - und ambitionierter denn je. Dabei spielt JOANNE mit den Genres, sodass das Album zu einem kurzweiligen Spaß wird. DANCIN' IN CIRCLES, ein Song über die Stärke, die man aus der Einsamkeit gewinnen kann, verströmt leichtes Reggaefeeling, während A-YO an den Oldschool-R&B von Meghan Trainor erinnert und einen positiv gestimmten Abgesang an Kritiker darstellt. Den absoluten Höhepunkt erreicht das Album in der zweiten Hälfte: In HEY GIRL tut sich Gagas Gesangsorgan mit der glockenklaren Stimme einer Florence Welch von Florence + the Machine zusammen. Sie singen einen Song über eine felsenfeste Freundschaft, bei dem beide zu gleichen Anteilen beteiligt sind. Die zarten Harfenklänge stehen einfach für Florence' Stil, während das treibende Schlagzeug Gagas Sound repräsentiert. Nach insgesamt vierzehn Titeln, inklusive drei Bonustracks, ist dann Schluss mit JOANNE und man fragt sich unweigerlich, wo die Zeit hin. Es gibt keine Hänger, das Album kann man getrost durchlaufen lassen... am besten gleich nochmal. --- Zur Doppelvinyl --- Mit reichlich Verspätung bekam nun auch JOANNE die Vinylbehandlung in Form der Deluxe-Version, was de facto bedeutet, dass die drei Bonustracks GRIGIO GIRLS, JUST ANOTHER DAY und die raue Demoaufnahme von ANGEL DOWN Bestandteil der Titelliste sind. Auf zwei schwarzen, massiven Platten kann man die rund fünfzig Minuten Musik in einwandfreier Pressqualität genießen. Die beiden LPs stecken in einem aufklappbaren Cover mit bebilderten Papierinnenhüllen, die gleichzeitig alle Songtexte und Produktionsnotizen bereithalten - vorbildlich! Einziges Manko dabei ist das Innenfutter der Hüllen, das leider nicht vorhanden ist. Antistatische Innersleeves gehören gegenwärtig zum absoluten Luxus. Zumindest knackst es bei meinem Exemplar nicht. Das Mastering kann leider seine Kompressionen nicht verbergen. Beispielsweise wirkt das Instrumental der lauten Eröffnungsnummer DIAMOND HEART teilweise etwas schwammig und um eine Vielzahl von Bits reduziert. War das etwa Absicht? Das kühl wirkende Klangbild hat seinen Höhepunkt ausgerechnet in der von mir kritisierten Single PERFECT ILLUSION, die mit einem plötzlichen Lautstärkeanstieg zu Beginn des Refrains aufwartet und besonders auf Vinyl zu beeindrucken weiß. Das Lied ist ja doch nicht so schlimm! Alles in allem ist die Vinyl keine klangliche Offenbarung und nur bedingt besser als die CD-Ausgabe - an die abgefahrenen Klangspielereien ihres Debüts THE FAME reicht die Aufnahmequalität von JOANNE nicht heran -, aber der Sound ist auch kein Totalausfall. --- Fazit --- JOANNE von Lady Gaga steht bestimmt auch bei Zuhörern im Regal, die sonst mit ihrer Musik nichts anfangen können. Es stellt die künstlerische Weiterentwicklung dar, die sie damals mit ARTPOP heraufbeschworen, nur leider nicht überzeugend genug erzielen konnte. ARTPOP ist sexy, frivol und synthetisch-tanzbar, während JOANNE nach kurzweiligem Indie-Pop klingt, mit dem man sich anfreunden kann. Das Werk wirkt wie etwas, das die Plattenfirmen fürchten müssen, wenn es von einem Weltstar wie Lady Gaga vorgelegt wird. Man erwartet eben anderes von ihr. JOANNE ist diesmal mehr Lady und weniger Gaga. Es wirkt nicht künstlich oder aufgeblasen, sondern durch den erwachsenen Grundton authentisch und durch die hervorgehobene Akustikkomponente stimmgewaltig. Wenn man von ihrer vorangegangenen Zusammenarbeit mit Tony Bennett auf CHEEK TO CHEEK noch nichts gehört hat, wird vom vorliegenden Album sogar noch beeindruckter sein. Die Qualität der Vinylpressung ist dabei über allen Zweifeln erhaben. Das Gatefold wurde ausreichend gestaltet. Nur die Innersleeves hätte man besser mit gefüttertem Inhalt fertigen sollen, damit man von den knackserfreien Platten lange etwas hat. Immerhin ist man von den standardisierten Papierhüllen weggekommen, die noch bei der ARTPOP-Doppelvinyl an der Hausordnung waren. Auch wenn das Mastering kühl ausfällt und man von dieser besonderen Gaga-LP klanglich mehr Leben erwartet hätte, so gibt es keine groben Schnitzer zu vermelden. Da man keine halben Sterne vergeben kann und der mutige Inhalt sehr stark strahlt, runde ich auf fünf auf. Mut wird schließlich belohnt. JOANNE ist eine der großen Überraschungen im Pop 2016 und wahrscheinlich das beste Album, das Lady Gaga je veröffentlicht hat.
