Just like the steel section for construction, if you look at it from the end it shape is an I with a shorter cross at both top and bottom. The box bit just means both ends are filled in with protective rubber. Its just a term so if you want a spirit just buy it. I got it because it was longer than the one i had. I'm not expecting this to be a majot issue with them being stanley though. The level arrived straight and true on both vials which was my biggest concern with ordering online. It has a nice milled edge on the bottom, vials are easily read although I do tend to prefer having a bigger bubble in the vial but that is just a minor gripe.
