Does this item reduce nitrates?

Nitrates build up in a pond because of the koi. This product cannot stop this natural cycle.

Will this help on water staines. On fish tank?

This type of Carbon filter ( Dechlorinator )is quite large and is used mainly on ponds rather than tanks. If your water stains are caused by calcium deposits or any sort of algae, I don't think this would be the right one for you.

Has anyone found a suitable fitting to connect this vertically to the wall?

FloPlast SP82BL Pipe Clips Black are fine, put the top one right where the clear tube changes to moulded plastic If you're hard piping them in use JG Speedfit Plastic Push-Fit Straight Tap Connectors 15mm x ¾" 2 Pack though you will need to PTFE tape the threads

How do you know when the Dechlorinator is no onger effective?

The only way is to test with dpd4 tablets or test strips for chlorine and chloramine. I have a flow meter before mine, so I know that I've put 90,000 litres through already, when I get to 250,000 I'll start testing weekly
