They have a short blade, I would imagine this is for a few reasons, one being the tool should never be that far from the rest and the longer handle gives more control when doing the 'turners dance' . I always feel in control of the tool and it cuts fine with very little catches, I've not used a lathe in 2r years so I would imagine that was me. They work very well for spindles, but don't use them on any bowls, which you would need to buy bowl gouges. The chisels get dull quite quickly though.
