This book is not altogether what it appears
In many ways this is a very traditional 'how to' book, with a central technique that would be very useful to teachers of GCSE Art, and easily applicable to a group. The author's own work is part of the didactic structure, and examples of facial expressions are juxtaposed with basic anatomical line drawings to show how expressions are formed by the body. The five star element is the range of work published by contemporary ceramic sculptors, which is very challenging and highly creative. I sat up in bed reading this and got to the last few portfolio pagea, and wondered whether I should be looking at the work before sleep. So it's cover belies the contents, which vary between pedestrian and downright scary.

Was just right for me
I m a reasonable but amateur sculptor, and this is very good. It gives breakdowns of the basic shapes of the face, the differences between male & female faces, the proportions , so you know the relationship between nose, eyes, eards, mouth, etc. It also gives examples of different expressions, explaining the muscles used, clearly. it uses real people as models, and egs of finished art works, as well as his own clay work to demonstrate each. Highly recommended.

Develop the talent
Recently bought, the book has simple steps easy to follow on how to sculpt faces in clay. I have some experience in sculpting, previously buildng faces used to be where I had been challenged. In recent I have improved through a live sculpting course. Despite the live sculpting course, I believe the methods used by the author will help to develop my skills further. I recommend it for beginner and adanced learners.

Great book for beginners
What an excellent book for beginers (like me on a degree course ) that doesnt have anyone with expertise in this media teaching me what i want to learn! It shows a break down of stages on how to's but after trying some the tecnuques in this book I still feel you need to have the tenacity to practise and find your own way of achieving what you want to do. I have found by exploring hollow building methods shown in this book , more spolid building using armatures are the way to go for me personally , but even my course tutro spotted this book at an art fare and had made a note to for college library to buy this.

I so wish I'd thought to look for this before I began my first bust. It would have saved me a whole lot of time, and increased the chance that the finished piece will dry evenly enough to remain free of cracks before it goes into the kiln. Fingers crossed! Because I tend towards realism (and being a born perfectionist) it took a lot of time to work and re-work the face until it became real enough, and with the subtle smile that I was hoping to achieve. This book has excellent photos of not only the work in clay but also of models who offer a good range of expressions for every mood. It's also full of inspiring pieces from a range of different artists. The techniques are clearly laid out, step by step, and shown in good detail. The only thing that could have improved this for me would be to see some details of neck and shoulders. My figure is of a woman with her eyes half closed, face tilted upwards and slightly to the side. As is almost always the case, the neck and shoulders are the base of a bust, and I was hoping to see some examples of protrusions of the spinal cord, and the scapulas to help to perfect my piece. It's very hard to find photos that help with something like this. Overall though, I highly recommend this book. Love it!
