The difference is that the classic has a plastic body and the pro has a metal body. The pro feels much more robust, and has a nice weight to it. The classic doesn't feel like it will break, but it is so light it doesnt feel as nice. Both sharpen knives to the same standard. Get the pro if you want it to last years though! **Q: how come some people say it is not electric and one says it is....what is it???!!!** A: This device is non electric. It is purely mechanical and doesn't have or needs batteries, electricity, transformers or motors of any kind. It is cleverly designed to be efficient, stored away safely in very little space and is mounted safely on kitchen worktops when you want to use it. The suction at the bottom of the gadget holds the sharpener firmly so that you can get on with the knife sharpening in safety. It is excellent and I will continue to do so. However, my son was headed off to Uni and had bought himself a few knives to accompany him. He wasn't going to invest the time in sharpening knives with a steel and so we purchased this. If I'm honest, I was sceptical.It's a small, lightweight gadget which sticks to the kitchen worktop via suction (I can imagine some surfaces may be a problem - wood for example). Once secure, you drag your knife through being careful not to press too hard. It does require me to psychologically prepare myself as it feels a bit like nails on a chalkboard (shudder) but it's a quick process.What's good about it?Well, it's compact, sticks really well to the kitchen worktop, is safe, cheap, quick, and easy to use. It also works on serrated edge knives, which I think is a bonus. I've tested it on everything - his cheap knives; my better ones (but not my best ones). It worked really well on all of them.What's annoying about itNot a lot really. His flatmates keep borrowing it, which I suppose counts as a recommendation in itself. He's home for the summer now and so it's living happily in my kitchen. The only downside is it does take metal off your knives and so over time you are probably wearing them away. For me, that is the reason I wouldn't use it for my best, expensive knives.Worth it?I think for something that actually works and doesn't cost a lot of money it is worth it. For the price it does create a sharp blade which makes food prep so much easier. Would I use it on expensive knives - probably not.
