## Description

From the manufacturer Companion 50 multimedia speaker system The Companion 50 system immerses you in a dramatic acoustic environment you might expect only from a five-speaker system. Yet it all comes from just two elegant desktop speakers and a hideaway Acoustimass module. Rich, detailed sound with a wide soundstage immerses you in the experience Deep, accurate bass from the Acoustimass module, which you can hide under a desk All-in-one control pod houses volume control, single-touch mute, headphone jack and auxiliary input Single connection to your computer —no sound cards or software upgrades needed Energy-saving sleep mode engages after 30 minutes of inactivity Get more of the experience More and more, you’re using your computer for all kinds of entertainment. Music. Films and TV programmes. Gaming. But if you’re still using your laptop speakers, or the ones that came with your desktop, you’re not coming close to the audio experience that you should be getting. The Companion 50 system provides a welcome change. It uses proprietary TrueSpace digital processing circuitry to deliver a wide, spacious soundstage, reproducing the original dramatic intent behind the music, films and games you enjoy. More sound. Less clutter. Easy set-up It’s the kind of enveloping sound that you’d expect more from a five-speaker surround system — fine for living rooms but impractical for a computer. The two small, elegant desktop speakers are elevated on stands for optimum performance and extra usable desk space. Hook-up requires only a single connection from the computer speaker system to your PC or laptop — no special software or hardware upgrade needed. An all-in-one control pod keeps volume control, single-touch mute, headphone jack and auxiliary input within easy reach. The system goes into sleep mode after 30 minutes of inactivity and wakes up when an audio signal is received or the control pod is tapped.

Review: What a shame; I thought I could rely on Bose products. - I have bought, and still own, other Bose products, which have given me no end of faultless listening pleasure, over the years, but the Companion 50 Multimedia Speaker System is a shocker. I am surprised that Bose is willing to risk its reputation putting out such a mediocre product. To say that I was surprised at the performance, or rather the lack of it, would be a gross understatement. I was, and still am, shocked at just what a poor performance it delivers, out of the box. Even with the controls properly adjusted, when I first set it up the sound was boxy, the mid-range was dull, the top-end and the base were MIA, and the sound-stage was about as big as the box it was delivered in. And to cap it off, the right channel output was only two thirds of the left. Really, just awful, and not worth the shipping cost, never mind the purchase price. I just couldn't believe it was that bad. There had to be something else wrong. So first I played around with the location of the satellite speakers on my desk, and the sub-woofer underneath it, as well as reconfiguring the audio drivers on my PC. After about an hour, I had it about as good as it was going to get. And, considering the cost, it was still VERY average. In fact I'd heard better sound coming out of a £140 PC sound system. So, next I changed out the 'el cheapo' Bose aux cable, which the system came with, for an IBRA premium quality, dual shielded cable with 24k gold plated connectors. WOW, what a difference! Still a little disappointing, but a HUGE improvement. The problem seems to be that the output of my PC Aux is insufficient to drive it and produce a reasonable quality sound-stage and presence. So, not one to be easily beaten, I've ordered a Sabre 9018 USB DAC, which I have heard are very good. If that doesn't do it, I am going to return it. *** OMG moment 3 days later! *** I first want to say, I just reconnected the system to my computer via a Sabre 9018 USB Dac and the improvement is awesome. Totally awesome! Clearly, its definitely not Bose's fault that the sound output of my motherboard is not sufficient to drive their Companion 50 Multimedia Speaker System. BUT, driving it with the Sabre 9018 USB Dac, which is a simple plugin -- one end into a USB port and the other into the Aux cable -- improves the performance beyond recognition. The top end is "real", the mid-range very present and pure, with no 'boxy' colouration, and base is solid, but not 'boomy'. Not a very technical explanation but I hope you get what I mean. I am sitting here streaming my Seasick Steve playlist at the moment and Steve (plus the band/backing/audience), are right here in the room with me!!! I can't believe the difference it makes. It would be niggardly not to give Bose 5 stars for the system, just because of the 'el cheapo' Aux cable, so I have uprated my review. IMPORTANT: Don't try and drive this system with just raw Aux output from your computer. If you don't already have a sound card, get a "Hifime Sabre 9018 USB DAC" and connect it to your Bose system with an IBRA "Aux Cable 2M 3.5mm Stereo Premium Auxiliary Audio Cable", not the 'el cheapo' one Bose provides. That's an extra £75 to invest, but you'll be very VERY glad you did.
Review: An excellent PC speaker system - Good Points: - Sound quality is incredible - Volume control and headphone port is a nice touch - Very well built - It can go incredibly loud - hurt your ears loud - and still sound great - Bass control means you don't have to annoy your neighbours at night - Nice and easy to set up: idiot proof left and right cables. Bad Points - Analogue input means you're limited by the audio circuitry in your motherboard, doesn't matter what they say about signal processing you're still limited by it. I spent £50 on a sound card to make sure I was getting the most out of the system but the difference wasn't anything like the difference between these speakers and my old £20 logitech one it must be said. So they still sound very good with motherboard audio output. - I've experienced a quiet hiss with no input but having emailed Bose they say it's probably due to interference with power cables etc. which seems very plausible given that the sub (where all the control circuitry is) is located in the midst of the most horrific wiring jumble. Having said this, it is only very quiet and it doesn't affect the sound quality whilst listening at normal volumes. - Audio input cable could have been a bit better but it's hardly a deal breaker.

## Questions & Answers

**Q: Does any one else find they get a noticiable hissing sound when no music playing?! Have turned source sound down and tried other sources. Thanks :))**
A: Electrical interference when using onboard sound ports are common. If you want to get rid of the white noise, buy a (decent) soundcard whether it be internal or external.

https://www.howtogeek.com/298252/why-are-my-pc-speakers-making-weird-noises/

**Q: What is the different between Bose Companion 5 and Companion 50?**
A: The Bose Companion 50 uses a standard 3.5mm male audio lead jack to connect to your equipment, rather than the USB used by the Bose Companion 5, also some improved update to the audio processing capabilities, other than that same as.

**Q: How long are the cables from the speakers to the bass unit?**
A: Without actually pulling them out to measure I would say 2m plus. Whatever they are quite adequate.

**Q: Could this system work with a sony bravia 2018 tv?**
A: It will, however you just need to connect it somehow from an audio output on the TV with a 3.5mm Jack Plug on the other end of the cable to go in to the Companion 50 Control module. There is no Blue tooth or anything like that

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Downgraded version of Companion 5
*by P***S on 4 February 2020*

The Bose Companion 5 was perfect. These speakers look exactly the same, might probably be the same, but the driver/amp is changed. I've owned both so can tell. Companion 5 had: * Built in digital to analog sound processing, connected with USB to the computer * No annoying hissing sound whenever the speakers are on, just total silence * Really immersive virtual surround sound I miss the old, original Companion 5 version. Still the Companion 5 is the best computer speaker in this size and price category. To get something similar you would need to get an amplifier and separate stereo speakers. So its good.
