Spider-Man [Tom Holland] begins to navigate his new identity as the web-slinging super hero under the watchful eye of his mentor Tony Stark. Review: A great entry to the MCU as well as my favorite Spider-Man thus far - Comic Book Movie Review (9/10) "Amazing" (non-spoiler) Spider-Man: Homecoming Director: Jon Watts Starring: Tom Holland (Peter Parker), Michael Keaton (Adrian Toomes), Robert Downey Jr (Tony Stark), and Jacob Batalon (Ned Leeds) Plot: After successfully taking on Captain America's Avengers in "Civil War" in Berlin, Peter Parker is back in Queens, New York and juggling with school work, catching bad guys, and his non-relationship life. Toomes is a disgruntled business man that makes weapons from salvaged alien tech and Spider-Man must stop him before others are caught in the crossfire. I'm going to say it outright from the getgo: this is the greatest Spider-Man movie ever made. It's not perfect, but it definitely overthrew Raimi's Spider-Man 2 (2004) as my favorite Spider-Man movie of all time. This movie gets the villain right - which is big considering how lackluster the villains in the MCU have been for the majority of movies; the movie feels like a Spider-Man comic; and most importantly it gets Peter Parker right. This movie's Peter Parker is only 15, and though Holland is in his 20's, he definitely sells the idea that he is a young teenager battling with his hormones, his sense of self-worth, and trying to impress his friends. One of the key conflicts that sells this idea is the fact he struggles with whether he should reveal the fact that he is really Spider-Man to his friends to gain popularity. Most teenagers deal with their sense of self-worth, their sense of belonging to a group, and every little problem feels magnified and this movie truly makes you feels these things with the high school setting, Holland's superb performance, and Parker's environment. "He treats me like a kid" says Parker. "But you are a kid" replies his friend Ned. This scene is also shown in the trailers, and it really tells you the premise of the movie in two sentences. Stark is the perfect foil for Parker's sense of self worth and need to prove himself, and Stark's involvement in this movie feels very natural rather than forced in to bring box office numbers. Iron Man boosts movie ticket sales (i.e. Iron Man 3 and Captain America: Civil War surpassed $1 billion worldwide respectively) and he might feel forced into this movie to raise this movie's profile, but he is included in this story as a mentor figure and has pertinent goals that push the narrative of the movie. Keaton also delivers a great villain performance, as he feels like a threat on Spider-Man and his friends and whenever he comes on screen Toomes feels like a threat and is capable of bringing Spider-Man down. Smooth, calculating, and smart, Toomes is a perfect antagonist to Spider-Man in this movie as he tests Parker to his limit. Ned is also a great character in this movie, and though in the comics he is a reporter working for the Daily Bugle and the third Hobgoblin, he is Parker's best friend and his confidante in a high school world riddled with Spanish tests, judgmental bullies, and the dreadful school dance. I probably laughed the most from the interactions between Ned and Parker as well as other characters, and he is the comic relief often times when the movie gets too serious. This movie tiptoes between the super serious, and the super light-hearted masterfully and a major reason for this tiptoing due to Batalon's portrayal of the character. The only things that I didn't like from this movie were Marisa Tomei's Aunt May and how she was constantly being hit on by other men and this seemed to be a running joke that came back a few times and overly done; it felt a bit farfetched that the Avengers would also not notice Toomes' operations before Spider-Man showed up if the Avengers had SHIELD and its omniscient presence in New York; and the movie's plot is a bit predicatable towards the end. Still this movie's combination of a great Peter Parker/ Spider-Man and a great premise makes a great entry to the MCU as well as my favorite Spider-Man thus far. Review: Spoiler Free review, and then a slight scolding for some people. (minor spoilers in that) - This film is entertaining, fast paced but not rushed. The characters are relatable to almost everyone and are family friendly. This incarnation of Spider-Man is good starting off point for a reboot as it gives the characters plenty of room to grow, doesn't rehash the origin story and ties you in to the current Marvel universe. This is not a dark story but it's done well. I'd knock off half a star because you are amused alot more than you are intrigued and personally I like deeper stories, but this is still great for what it is. Ok, here is the scolding- Minor spoilers “I am tired of being surrounded by this politically correct crap”- An amalgam of a few complaints about this film. Spiderman has been rebooted more times than a Dell from 2003. I expected to read some negative reviews considering the fact that Hollywood can’t make up it’s mind about this franchise but I’m really “ugh” about some of the things I’ve read here. Marvel has been changing the colour or region of origin of many main characters. White people (yes, I’m one of them) seem to have been kidnapped from certain stories and replaced with black, Latino, Asian, and even gay people *gasp*. I am not mad about this, but it weirds me out a bit because in my head there is a 32 year old picture of a white hetero character. It’s very hard to undo 32 years of a memory and association with a 2 hour film. I understand the initial “hey wait a minute!” but I thought about the future (looks to beyond) and understood for the viewer, it’s important that these stories and characters look like the world around you. It makes it more believable to almost everybody. (Excluding Sweden) These beloved characters and their adventures helped so many people in the past by giving them a smile, a place to escape, or even a full blown belief system. Spider-man and the like is not something you can keep to keep to yourself. The world is full of different colors and creeds of people whether you like it or not. Those people need Spider-man just like you did. You need to take a hard look at yourself if your escapism is predicated on a whites only world and you actively complain about making these stories more relatable to the children of the planet. Is Hollywood forcing “politically correct crap down my throat!!” because of the all-powerful gay alliance with the blank panthers? Nope nope nope! They look at the numbers and see dollar signs. It makes more financial sense to make the stories more relatable to a demographic which has changed and is still changing. Imagine all the goodwill new viewers will feel when they see Spider-man saving them too. Can you be Spiderman’s best friend if you’re not white? Yes. See where I’m going with this? Your words are a revealing and sad cry of someone who proves that “white privilege” exists. Ugh.

Great
Homecoming is the newest live-action incarnation of Spiderman with this version of Peter Parker/Spiderman, being played by Tom Holland. The character was actually introduced during Captain America Civil War, fighting on the Iron Man side, and the events of this movie are mostly set after the events of Civil War, with Peter Parker going back to life as a high-school student. He is still being mentored by Stark (mostly from afar), and being watched over by Happy Hogan (played again by Jon Favreau). The movie also has ties to the first Avengers movie with the Chitauri technology playing a large role in the plot of the movie. Peter becomes more concerned with fighting crime than he is with school, which does not always work out well for him. The movie also sees the return of Michael Keaton to the superhero genre, this time in a much different role. The rest of the cast is very strong and includes Zendeya, Jacob Batalon, Donald Glover, and Marissa Tomei, as Aunt May. For those who get the 4k-UHD set, there are two discs, the UHD disc, and a regular blu-ray disc. The A/V quality of the UHD disc is great, and the movie looks and sounds wonderful in the format. The UHD disc has one extra, the Spidey Study Guide, that allows the movie to be played with pop-ups that have trivia and facts about the movie. The rest of the extras are on the regular blu-ray disc. Those include a short gag reel, about 16 minutes of deleted and extended scenes, eight different making-of and behind-the-scenes featurettes that run about 45 minutes, give or take, all totaled, a photo gallery, the movie trailer, and trailers for other Sony titles. Overall, the movie is very good. It has a nice blend of action and humor and is a bit more light-hearted than some of the other MCU movies. Holland does a great job as the lead, and you can buy him as a teenager even though he was in his early 20s when the movie was made. Robert Downey Jr. is always entertaining as Tony Stark (especially when he was hitting on Aunt May), and both Batalon (playing Peter's best friend, Ned) and Zendaya (playing Michelle/MJ) were great in the younger roles. For me, however, Keaton really stole the show and seemed to really be enjoying his return to the superhero genre. It is a great movie that is definitely worth checking out.

Not a corner piece of the MCU puzzle but a good one nonetheless.
This review should be closer to 31/2 stars but I rounded up. Spider Man Homecoming for me felt like one of the filler MCU movies to keep us entertained between Captain America and Avengers installments. I would place it somewhere between the first Thor film and Iron Man 2 in entertainment quality and Doctor Strange in terms of impact. However, this is freaking SPIDER MAN!! This should have fit well within the major players and been on the level of another Iron Man. I'll start with the bad since people focus more on that. CONS: I'll just come out with it. Many of the social justice tropes that got dropped into the movie felt forced and cringy. The first time I watched it, I wasn't as bothered. The second and third times got worse and worse. As a person of color, I am all for diversity, but I can't help but feel some of the elements presented were an attempt to appeal to a certain audience. The Michelle (MJ) character was an illustration of this weak pandering. Initially, it seemed like her character was a parody of the mindless wave of social justice warrior culture. However, as I viewed the movie again, I realized she's more an homage to it. I could go on and on but there was nothing enduring about her. Additionally, Peter's friend while great for comic relief, I also found irritating. Seriously, I think someone said to the script writer "I bet you can't jam the word awesome into this guy's lines 150 times!" The script writer said "challenge accepted, I'll do it 200 times!" The overall plot was entertaining but it felt somewhat phoned in. As if MCU said "ooh, Sony is letting us borrow Spider Man! Let's get something out there, fast!!" PROS: As mediocre as this installment can be at times it's leaps and bounds better than the garbage that Spider Man 3 and Amazing Spider Man 2 were. It's a testament to not cramming too many villains and plotlines into a single film. As with every MCU film the visuals are top notch. The clean and uncluttered cinematography was refreshing in an era of maxing out CGI potential with a lot of moving parts (ahem, Transformers.) Marissa Tomei as Aunt May was ridiculous initially but she really pulled it off and made the character her own. Michael Keaton's vulture villain was well acted and believable. Though he's just a john-everyman with a grudge, his motivations are relatable and he is easily one of my favorite MCU villains. Robert Downey Jr's Iron Man is always a welcome (side) character. Overall this movie, while not fantastic on its own, is a fantastic piece of the MCU puzzle. If you are a comic book movie fan and haven't seen this yet, what is wrong with you?! If you're just looking for a simple and (almost too) inoffensive action movie to spend time on, you can't go wrong.

The Hype is Worth It!
Every exclamatory and superlative, positive thing you've ever heard about Tom Holland, about this particular Spider-Man reboot, about the villains and cast, is TRUE!!! I was absolutely blown away! I'm old, so I've seen every iteration of Spider-Man out there...seriously. The old cartoon that gave us the ridiculously catchy theme song. The LIVE-ACTION series in the late '70s, running simultaneously against Wonder Woman the television series. The Tobey Maguire, the Andrew Garfield - and I hesitant on that one, then learned to LOVE it - movies, every single one of them...and now this one. OUTSTANDING!!! But the thing that really drew me in, believe it or not, was seeing Michael Keaton as Vulture, and seeing his whole backstory. Ad nauseum, we all know HOW Peter Parker becomes Spider-Man...the thing this movie does, is assumes that as well. Radioactive spider bite; end of story; move on. We didn't need to see the HOW of Spider-Man...but the HOW of Vulture, the HOW of "How are they going to tie THIS Spider-Man into the Avengers' MCU Phase Whatever It Might Be?" And they did, seamlessly. If there's one complaint I have, and this might have been intentional, is it's damned near-impossible to really see the wings of the suit very well, lots of aerial-at-night escapades. Like I said, makes sense, because he's a thief, they operate under the cloak of night. Perfect sense, I just would've cared to see them in a little more detail. Cost-saving method of making the narrative fully plausible? Okay, I can live with it, because this movie is SO good!

Spider-Man begins again. Again.
A new Spider-Man movie. As with 2012's the Amazing Spider-Man, this is a totally fresh take on him shorn of any connections to previous Spider-Man. But unlike that, this one does take place in the same fictional Universe as Marvel comics movies such as those with Captain America, Iron Man, and the Avengers. Thus familiarity with those will help. Especially with last year's Captain America: Civil War. As this shows what happens to Spider-Man after events in that. Peter has to balance school life with superhero life. With pining after the seemingly unattainable girl. With dealing with bullies. And his gig with the Avengers not being quite all he hoped it would be. Meantime, construction crew boss Adrian Toomes has spied an opportunity, and is making money from it. In the role of the Vulture. He and Peter are about to meet, and their worlds will never be the same again... Whilst I liked previous Spider-Man films for what they were, this does the character a power of good by putting him in an established and recognisable cinematic universe. And it's all the better for it. Yet it does keep all that on the sides with cameos and references, and keeps the focus firmly on Spider-Man himself. Which is the right way to go. It also gives us what the previous films didn't. Peter's high school years. All superbly portrayed. Tom Holland is as brilliant in the role as he was in Civil War, and he is surrounded by an excellent supporting cast for these scenes, which do balance character drama with humour superbly. Michael Keaton is also great as Toomes. And it's nice to get a villain who isn't someone who got powers in a lab accident and has gone on a crazed revenge quest, rather one with very believable motivations. It's also nice not to have to go through Spider-Man's origin story once again. The best Spider-Man film ever. Huge entertainment. Well worth a watch. There's an extra scene in the middle of the end credits. And one at the very end as well. They are worth waiting for. Possibly. The dvd has the following language and subtitle options: Languages: English, French, German, Turkish. Subtitles: English, Arabic, Dutch, French, German, Turkish. It begins with an anti piracy ad, which can be skipped via the next button on the dvd remote. It has the usual flyer with code to download copy of the film to a digital device. Extras: Searching for Spider-Man: a seven minute overview of the film and it's production. As short as these usually are, but manages to get a lot in and is really a great watch. Jon Watts: head of the class: four minutes about the director. Not as much detail as the above, but not bad and worth a watch. Spider-Man: homecoming VR Trailer. A two minute long trailer for a virtual reality Spider-Man game. Some good Tom Holland scenes but not enough of the VR section. A look at Marvel's Spider-Man playstation four: a two minute long feature and clips about another Spider-Man game. A short but interesting watch.

Endlich da wo er hingehört... (Filmrezi ONLY)
Wer weiß was Danny Elfman komponiert hätte.
