Your computer does the recording using any audio app. I'm not sure why MP3 is even in their description as it doesn't make sense. There are no files captured by this device, all it does is send audio to your computer - not files (not MP3s or any file) for you to record. So when you actually setup whatever audio software on your computer that you want to record into - make sure to set the settings (each app is different, but it should be in the settings somewhere, typically), and then make sure to set the app to whichever mode you want to record to - either mono or stereo. ...Then, you can save your file as an MP3 or other any other audio format you choose. As far as I can tell, there is absolutely no conversion happening to any type of file that is stored on this device - which includes MP3. This purely plays the audio, it does not record it. So the saving-part is all up to the user, which requires you to save the manually recorded audio (on your computer) into a file such as an MP3 as mentioned above. **Q: Can I listen to tapes on it or transfer them?** A: 1) Yes, you can listen to tapes, it does have a built-in speaker, or you can use headphones. 2) When it comes to the "transfer" part though, it gets a bit more complicated... I thought this product would actually "capture" the audio itself and store it on the device making it easy to transfer/record/digitize-my-old-tapes (I have a record player that does do this, and I thought this would work like it, but for cassette tapes); however it does not. To use this to transfer and digitize your tapes, you'll need to connect it to your computer via USB, and then it will show up as a normal audio capture device on your computer. Then, just like a mic or any other audio input device, you will need some audio software to actually "record" the incoming audio that this device sends. The manufacturer recommends the open-source app, "Audacity" (which is a nice, free audio app). Once you have the audio app open on your computer (Audacity, or any other audio app that you know how to use) - you then press "Play" on this device, and "Record" on your computer. Your computer will then just start to record the incoming audio from this device, just like a mic would - this works no different. So just to be clear - this product will not capture and save your cassette tapes to it. You will need to connect this to your computer to actually record the audio (this is a fairly major step in the whole process - just so you're aware). There are other devices out there that will actually capture the tape's audio onto the device automatically, which you then just grab as files, and not just act as an audio-output stream, like this device does. I just wanted to point out the differences and what this product does and doesn't do so you can make an informed buying decision depending on what you want to do. **Q: Will this work is Cassettes that have videos that are Hi8 MP3, and is the soft-where compatible with Chromebook?** A: I do not know. The sound floats again (I checked the cassettes on other devices - the tape is normal). The first player the speaker did not work. The speaker was working now but quickly turned off and doesn't work now. When the device is turned off, the batteries are completely discharged. It cannot be used for digitization in any way. I use them to digitize old computer programs and tapes.This current model has been updated to USB C which is quite welcome, as I needed to keep a USB Micro cable around just to use it.One thing people might not realize, is that you don't need to put in batteries. Something I hadn't realized for a while.
