I design and build custom acoustic guitars. I also repair acoustic and electric guitars and restore historical guitars. Yes, you can use a higher guitar string gauge, to a certain point. You don't want to use huge strings on a guitar not designed for huge strings. With respect to asking if you could use a .009 for E and .012 for B, it depends. An electric guitar uses smaller strings. So, yes to an electric, no for an acoustic. .009 and .012 are too light for acoustic high E and B. General rule of thumb is to use the strings in the capacity for which they've been designed. **Q: For an acoustic guitar, what size would be good for a high e string?** A: I am assuming that you are referring to a steel string acoustic. Even then it depends upon the sound you want and the action you prefer. For the average steel string acoustic with "light gage strings, I would most likely choose a string of .010 in. If that seems to heavy, or the action seems to heavy, you could use a string of .009 in., or if you want a heavier tone (and action) you could try a .011 in string. I know that this did not help you much, but I could suggest that you check the sizes of that high E string on the packages of several reputable string companies, and see what they use. They sound fine and can be tuned like any other brand of strings. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Quite a Find! *by F***G on January 13, 2021* I generally play a Les Paul strung 9-46, and, like more than a few of you out there, I occasionally break the high E, and sometimes on a set that's barely broken in. I was a little skeptical about this product, and some of the reviews are quite negative. Well, my experience so far has been just great. First of all, these are spot-on .009 - I measured them with a micrometer. Next, each is individually hermetically sealed - not even the really-expensive strings do that. The tone is just fine; someone else here pointed out that high E's of different brand and composition sound pretty much same (I generally use stainless-steel or cobalt, and the strings in this set do indeed sound pretty much like those). Which brings me to - durability. Hard to say, as I have relatively few tunes on these, but then I did mention I'm not exactly gentle on guitar strings above, right? Regardless, the ball ends are nicely wound, and I suspect these things come out of the same Chinese factory that everyone else uses. Anyway, bottom line: highly recommended and a great value, and I really didn't expect be writing a review of these that said that.
