Yes, this model has a memory, it will turn up at the next sequence of the unit. So it has Hi-Med-Low-Strobe-SOS. So if you turn on, switch to med, turn off, and then turn on again it will start onn Low. It has some memory but is very short. After a few minutes off, it will go to HI

what type of battery does it require ?

This item comes with a rechargeable battery and a charger; however, I purchased several rechargeable batteries they are 18650 2600mAh 3.7V Li-ion which is the same as the battery this unit comes with. I own several of these flashlights and I use one at work they are surprisingly bright. Con is if you use it a lot batteries don't last but 20 minutes or less using it continuously.
