what is the difference between lactase and lactaid ?

Lactaid is a brand name. All the Lactaid products that I know of contain the enzyme "lactase". Lactase is a generic term for an enzyme that breaks lactose (glucose bound to galactose) into a molecule of glucose and a separate molecule of galactose. Both glucose and galactose are six-carbon surgars. The human body can only adsorb simple six-carbon sugars such as glucose and galactose. When six-carbon sugars are bound together, such as the sugar lactose (lactose = glucose+galacose) it does not get adsorbed by the intestine, instead the lactose travels down the gut and becomes food for bacteria. The bacteria grow and grow, creating gas, and the lactose itself pulls water out of the body and causes diarrhea (osmotic effect). Most people secrete the enzyme lactase into their intestine to break down lactose, but if you do not secrete enough, then you have lactose intolerance. This can be temporary (after a stomach infection) or congenital lactase deficiency.  Often lactase deficiency gets worse as people grow up from childhood. You can replace the enzyme by taking it orally or eat food that already has the lactose broken down (ie lactose-free milk). Note that breaking down lactose before eating the milk will make it taste sweeter, since glucose is produced.

They come in strips containing 10 pills but each pill is individually wrapped so you can separate as many as needed. I usually carry around two or three in case of need if I am eating out
