Combining the cards is even better then both individual games. Mechanics of the game are enhanced with the new expansion, new strategies appear the more you play, I cannot say enough good things about this game. If you want to go back to the original or the expansion alone, the cards are easy to tell apart so you can easily sift out the expansion cards from the base set. Yes the cards are different quality and yes you can tell new from old, but I honestly have not been able to ascertain whether this matters one bit to gameplay. I see a lot of reviews ripping the game for this alone, but wow, this is such a minor nitpick, give the company a break, they put out an awesome game, then give us a well needed expansion at a very reasonable price.Expansion is great, get it, you will enjoy it if you enjoy the base set, its as simple as that. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Great expansion to a fantastic game, don't expect to get as much *by M***O on Reviewed in the United States on September 1, 2011* I love Ascension and I am a big defender of its depth and the quality of the strategy, especially when compared to a game like Magic, which play out way to random for me.With that said, I found this expansion to be a great addition to the core game, providing even more player interaction. The new 8 rune cards are well balanced in that their aren't game breaking, but a serious carrot for both players providing a fun, frenzied excitement to pick them up.This game doesn't have the very useful cardboard playing board that the original does and the box is a bit small to adequately store all the cards so I wouldn't buy this is a standalone option (although it will work well as such) and instead pair it with the core game. It is an expansion and don't let the star rating for the game represent the quality of the gameplay.
