Review: Buy a genuine rtl-sdr for AIS instead - Forgot to review this as I plugged it in once , saw the abismal performance then lobbed it into the drawer with the rest of the poor performing SDRs. Really disappointed to say the least . I reckon a 40% drop in both Class A and Class B messages and ships on the map with this dongle. Some folk are saying "it depends on your surroundings" etc etc . I live on a hill with an almost 280 degree view of the river and its marinas , ports and mil base. Even tried this with an Uputronics filter for 162mhz and still got around the same msg rate. You may need to look for an aerial that has the matching SMA connector or just purchase a BNC to SMA adaptor. AIS reception is specifically162.025 MHz & 161.975 MHz and you can purchase (more expensive of course) an antenna tuned for these frequencies; remember also that VHF is essentially line-of-sight so unless you are on the coast or high up you won't get very much. The ShipXplorer website is confusing as it says “Works on any device.” And “enables the reception of AIS messages and data directly onto devices such as a Raspberry Pi or Laptop”; annoyingly “or laptop” doesn’t mean Windows. It’s Pi (Debian/Linux) or nothing.
