You need this for the R1 system because it only comes with adapters for lens with the following filter thread sizes: 52mm, 62mm, 67mm, 72mm, and 77mm. My 90mm Tamron macro has a 55mm filter thread size.I cant tell if its made of plastic or metal but it seems sturdy enough for everyday use. All in all, it a great product in my opinion. Now I have a 62mm Nikon lens cap on order so I can leave the step up ring on the lens at all times. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ It gets the job done *by C***N on January 23, 2010* This Kenko step-up ring attaches to the front of any lens that takes 55mm filters (which isn't one of the more common sizes), and makes it possible to attach 58mm filters instead (which are quite common). This can be useful if you happen to have 58mm filters that you bought for some other lens, and you don't want to buy a set of 55mm filters. The Kenko step-up ring is no larger than it needs to be, fits into place well, and does exactly what it's supposed to do.One thing to be aware of is that when a step-up ring is installed on a lens, the lens's cap will not fit.
