First, you need to check how many amps your pump uses, and how far from the battery it is. For a small pump, say 3 amps, and a short wire run (~10 feet), 16 gauge would be okay. For longer runs and bigger motors, consult the many charts online for what will work for you.

I guess the question is a bit unclear, it really bears questioning what your intended purpose is. 24awg is the largest gauge 26 in the middle and 28 being the thinnest. Generally these wires are used for running circuitry of some sort. Think of the wiring harness on your car or wiring the bed lights on your truck. Or for example wiring cat5 or 6 or even wiring up telephone lines. Whilst these individual wires would be unnecessary for those things as there are specifically designed cables for those purposes these are good examples of what this wiring is intended for. I think if you’re concerned about amp/current ratings it sounds like you may prefer larger gauge wire or cable. And like I said as far as AWG is concerned 24 is the thickest thus allowing for the greatest amp/current to pass. If you’re wiring subs on the other hand or speakers go with 16 gauge at a minimum.
