While the connectors are different internally, from the outside, they are identical. **Q: I've never stripped a cable with the crimping tool before. Does this crimper do a good job at that?** A: hey Zack! although this tool will strip the plastic sleeve from the Cat5 cable I never use this. not sure whether you know this or not and pardon me if I'm stating the obvious but you don't strip the individual strands on Cat5 cable. anyway, I use a little yellow cable stripper to "strip" the plastic sleeve from the Cat5 cable, if you like I can find it for you, it's a simple yellow plastic tool that's around $7 I think. you place the Cat5 cable in the tool, it clamps down and you twist the tool around the cable 2-3 times, works well. I've never used the tripper in the crimping tools, they always cut into the strands too much imo **Q: Will this work on shielded RJ45 connectors?** A: no, it fits only unheralded connectors **Q: does this tool works on cat 6** A: Yes ## Customer Reviews ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Love it! *by I***S on September 27, 2011* Compared to others I've seen and worked with, this one is really great and simple to use. For a few extra bucks you can actually get quality which will last you a long time. This is just a crimper so there's not a lot to say but I can say for someone making cables all day (do people still do that?), the grip is good and for flat cables, it cuts and strips at the same time so your hands all-in-all should feel fine 4 hours into it.Only complaint I have is that for rounded cable, even for a thicker cable, the blade doesn't hit it enough which is odd because every crimper I've used that has this feature manages to at least do that.. (towards the back of the crimper there is a little place to lay your rounded cable down). I tried on two different cables from different companies. I realize why they'd design it low - to accommodate thicker cables so they dont get cut too deep. The solution here is to carefully move the crimper back while you twist the cable with your other hand forward, flip the cable over - do it again then take the casing off which after only doing it a few times I got the hang of it.I've seen some fake reviews on here like most product reviews I see, but this really is great for the money. Out of all the crimpers on the interweb, this one is the most durable, offers the most features for the lowest cost. Newegg which sells this for more has it as its top crimper with a perfect 5 star rating... so yeah, no need to guess anymore...unless the second paragraph I said bothers you, then for that you can get a super cheap stripper which a lot of people like using separate anyways...still this is the one to get! ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Very nice tool, with some caveats *by D***S on October 26, 2020* Affordable, yet more features and a solid metal construction (compared to the more expensive cheap plastic one I previously bought at the big-box store). Stripping Cat5e/6 cable is so easy, and crimping feels very sturdy.These ratchet until they reach their full clamping, after which the ratchet releases. The release knob is designed to release the ratchet if something gets jammed; I did not experience the "does not work" issue that another review mentioned.There are a couple of caveats though, especially for newbies:- There are little to no instructions on how to use. If you are not mechanically inclined, this may be a problem- The crappy set I got from the big box store has a wire chart on the back of the package which is a great reference. No such charts are supplied with this tool- If you are using the cable sheath stripper, it's a little tricky if you let go of the tool because the ratchet releases, and makes it difficult to rotate around the cable. In that case, you have to fiddle with it a bit.Still, for the price, I can forgive all of these shortcomings. As an occasional home user, this is great and far exceeded my expectations. As a professional, I might want better. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Use separate cutters as the razer blades were not that sharp *by R***R on July 18, 2025* It does the job. Razer blades are not as sharp as expected.
