I've used several little sharpeners like this and this is one of the better ones. Easy to use and puts a good edge on knives. Don't expect it to get your knifes razor sharp but it will get them sharp enough to for example cut through a old soft tomato. As mentioned in the headline the whistle is loud and the fire starter work. The rods have a coating on them you need to scrape off first, any reviews saying they don't work must just not know how to use them. Will I ever need the whistle or fire starter probably not but they're nice to have and although they add to the size of it it's still just small enough to carry with you in your pocket/throw on a key chain.

Ok, I've owned the other one of these by the company staying with an "S". Had it for years from the days when I was active duty. This is one performs like that but better. It is larger so big hands, small hands ... Whatever, it will be very comfortable using. The added spark rod is a plus. If your blade needs a touch up stick to the ceramic. It does a fine job of getting it sharp. If your knife is a edc all purpose, in need of serious TLC....use the coarse then ceramic. This is great for field use! Used it on my machete and my fishing filet knife no issues.

Nice 10 in 1 tool ! Sharpener tool works great , the fire starter works very well and the hook sharpener is very good too. This product is a very smart buy. Fits in your pocket and is very very handy.

Buy several. This unit really works! The tapered hook sharpener works a a rasp for wood and plastics. Fero rod throws a spark. Whistle is loud. Sharpens with quickness and ease

Great quality sharpener that works! Really like the added diamond hone for rounded serrations, but can be used multiple ways on other things too. It's a lot larger than the pics make it look. Maybe I'll draw out the measurements on paper in the future lol!

The Sharpal 101NG Pocket Knife Sharpener competes with a number of other makers of similar products. Who was first with this product doesn't matter. The Sharpal 101NG is more attractive than others, but otherwise the features and functions of the others are similar or identical. So catching the eye is good, but price-point is better, and the Sharpal is both, and an extra Ferrocerium rod insert adds a bit more value, since that extra rod can be useful for certain buyers. Sharpal has put even the kitchen into their title, but really, while it could be used as a kitchen knife sharpener, this is more a field or shop gear bag or utility box item for those who aren't, shall we say, picky about how a knife "should" be sharpened. Doubt if a backpacker would tote this, but it might be in a car camper's gear box. What can it do? This type sharpener provides V carbide cutters for fixing real problem edges (takes a toll on the blade edge), and V ceramic inserts for actually sharpening edges. This type also provides a tapered diamond coated round rod for sharpening serrations as well as edges the V's don't accept. Now some brands end there. Others add Ferrocerium rod inserts and even button compasses to appeal to outdoorsy potential buyers. Personally I put the Sharpal into my Car Camping gear bag for just-in-case use. The spare Ferrocerium rod I put into a Day Pack "Emergency Fire-Making Kit", intended to be small, lightweight, and likely never used. I've also gifted the Sharpal 101N-G to my camping and backpacking adult children.

Functional, comfortable and easy to use. Works well and a great gift idea.
