There really isn't a pre filter that will make a big enough difference. The only thing that will really extend the resin life is a RO filtration. Warm regards, Customer Service Water System **Q: is this something you can use for your household drinking water? if not can someone suggest what to use or point me in the right direction?** A: Depends what your concerns about your water are.You can look at a dechlorinator which will remove most chlorine and other chemicals via charcoal but leaves the minerals.Or you can look at Reverse Osmosis which does what the dechlorinator does plus removes minerals.We have extremely hard water here (800 ppm, avg is about 150 ppm) so I use RO for drinking, tea, juice, coffee, etc. plus I use RO as the final rinse for my vehicles. **Q: Do you have to empty and rinse after each use ?** A: Good afternoon Jan,No you don't, you don't even have to empty the waster unless you aren't using it for more that 3 wks. You do want to change your resin when your meter is reading 20PPM. So you meter should be reading 0's for about 90-95 % of your resin life. Till recently, I had had a black pick up truck. It was such a pain to keep it clean as it's black. It was very difficult to wash it w/o leaving any water mark because the car is huge and by the time I dried one part of truck, the water on the other side would dry up leaving water marks. Some of the water spots actually never went away. then I bought this and used it only twice on the truck before I sold it but man, it practically eliminated the drying process. After washing the car with this unit, I just blew the excess water with blower and left the remaining water. It barely left any water spots. It still DID leave some water spots but it was night and day difference between before and after using this unit. Fortunately I got rid of the black truck and got white SUV. Since then, been washing my convertible and the SUV with this unit in half the time I would've spent washing the cars without the unit. I'm happy with the purchase but already concerned when the resin will run out. Although I use 2500 psi electric pressure washer, I feel I use quite a bit of water between 2 cars. I water them down first, snowfoam them, clean wheels while waiting, wash them down, hand soap them and wash down again. I try to conserve water not only because of resin but because of environment as well but I know I will have to purchase new set of resin soon again. But still all in all, I will continue to use it.
