desertcart.com : Penncross Creeping Bent Grass, 5 Pounds : Grass Plants : Patio, Lawn & Garden Review: grass for our home putting green - it is as advertised. The grass is growing well. We received it in a timely manner. It cost a little more, but we feel it is worth the extra cost Review: Makes a great lawn - I wish I could afford more of this because where I planted it, that section of the yard looks like a golf course lawn, and it makes the rest of my yard look rather pathetic. Going to save up and purchase more.

It didn't grow as thick as I thought, but it was okay. I live in Ariz. and the soil is a bit alkaliney (sp). Bent grass prefers the PH at between 5-7, so I dissolve ammonium sulfate in a hose sprayer and spray the grass...keeps it green.

I have ordered this item 3 times in the past and have had mediocre growth on a small, well kept green. On the last order, the seed sent was obviously larger than bent and had no certification (blue sticker for certified bent). It is obviously not bent. To make certain, I had a local superintendent and agronomist look at the seed and he verified that it is in fact, not bent. Which means my green is probably ruined. Hopefully it doesn't germinate.

patience
Here's the thing, Bent grass is a very difficult grass to grow, but its also difficult to maintain. There's a reason as to why people who work with this grass have horticulture degrees, etc. Regardless, you must have proper drainage, proper soil, proper PH, and a proper soil temperature as well as ideal weather conditions when attempting to establish this grass from seed. From a planting perspective, I've had nothing but good luck with this particular seed. Like any seed it is important to apply a starter fertilizer and keep the soil damp until you begin to see reasonable establishment. The grass will likely come in as a seemingly patchy failure or as having random growth. My advice is to be patient and begin a daily regiment that includes appropriate watering, weeding by hand, and continuous monitoring while the initial germination occurs. Weeding (including the pulling of possible foreign grasses) is essential to allow room for the Bent grass seed to germinate and to likewise provide lateral growth expansion. Weeding is best done in the morning while the soil is damp. If you remain vigilant to this task your efforts will be minimal, and when fully established the chance for weeds will greatly lessen to almost none. When comfortable, cut the grass to a length that is manageable for continued seeding (1/2 inch or less) and continue to apply seed to your bare areas. Again, be patient but disciplined. Cutting should be no more than a third of the height. As establishment occurs over time work your cutting height down to the appropriate height. Also, be sure to kill your ants. I will also add that it's not realistic to suggest that you will acquire useable turf in a matter of weeks. With bent grass you will need to continually seed in order to achieve the putting surface we all would ideally have in our backyard. And when you have acquired said putting surface, you must continue to add light top dressings of fine soil and continue to seed. Best of luck!
