Q: The folding part appears to be made of plastic, unless that is a cover over metal parts that actually do the job. Can anyone verify this either way?

The handle is rubber for an excellent grip. the green section is heavy plastic. Have been using mine since I bought it, sawing Eureka Palm Tree's. It is the best folding hand saw I have bought in a very long time. I believe you will every happy with this product.

Q: Does the blade lock in the open position, in the closed position?

Yes the blade locks on both positions.

Q: Anyone use this to cut dry wall? How well does it cut?

I have not used it specifically for cutting dry wall but I know it would work well. Except that it is a little bigger than most dry wall saws.
