Wherever he goes, Buddhist monk Matthieu Ricard is asked to explain what meditation is, how it is done and what it can achieve. In this authoritative and inspiring book, he sets out to answer these questions. Matthieu Ricard shows that practising meditation can change our understanding of ourselves and the world around us. He talks us through its theory, spirituality and practical aspects of deep contemplation and illustrates each stage of his teaching with examples. Through his experience as a monk, his close reading of sacred texts and his deep knowledge of the Buddhist masters, Matthieu Ricard reveals the significant benefits that meditation - based on selfless love and compassion - can bring to each of us. A very good source of inspiration.
A very good source of inspiration. I enjoyed reading this book because of its good structure and its balance between explaining the benefits of meditation without overselling that message. Contrary to what is often seen in this kind of books, the author delivers his key messages clearly without blurring them with words and concepts that can sometimes be difficult to related to and understand for people not familiar with the cultures where spirituality is practised more intensively that in the West. The book delivers what is says it intends to, namely to introduce the reader to the art of meditation. To demystify the whole concept of meditation, the author provides persuasive scientific evidence of the positive processes taking place in the brain during and after meditation. The world would be a better place and would have happier populations if we all learned to meditate and cultivated the ultimate purpose of meditation, which are: peace of mind and altruistic love. Be inspired!

Left Me Hanging
I bought this book because I was considering meditation as a daily exercise for all the reasons anyone might. This book did little to either enlighten or enthuse. The author spoke in vagaries that went on and on, never giving either specific steps to take or specific objectives to the exercise of meditation. He never seriously addressed WHAT MEDITATION IS much less how to use it in one's daily life. Yes, he repeatedly indicated the importance of the process. I got that. But HOW to reach the state of tranquility, relaxation, focus and all the rest of it was never clear. In his defense, he pointed out that one must work with a teacher of some sort if one wishes to achieve the desired state. Reasonable enough, except that I never got WHAT the desired state was supposed to be like. In the end I felt that he had written this for someone else, as indeed he may well have. It was useless to me.

A deep view of meditation
It's a great overview about meditation. It gives a good perspective. I read it looking for techniques, but it isn't this kind of books. This book talks about why and how meditate not in techniques, but in purpose.
