Product Description With their father away fighting in the Civil War; Jo, Meg, Beth, and Amy grow up with their mother in somewhat reduced circumstances. They are a close family who inevitably have their squabbles and tragedies. But the bond holds even when friends and potential suitors start to become a part of the household. desertcart.com The flaws are easily forgiven in this beautiful version of Louisa May Alcott's novel. A stirring look at life in New England during the Civil War, Little Women is a triumph for all involved. We follow one family as they split into the world, ending up with the most independent, the outspoken Jo (Winona Ryder). This time around, the dramatics and conclusions fall into place a little too well, instead of finding life's little accidents along the way. Everyone now looks a bit too cute and oh, so nice. As the matron, Marmee, Susan Sarandon kicks the film into a modern tone, creating a movie alive with a great feminine sprit. Kirsten Dunst (Interview with the Vampire) has another showy role. The young ensemble cast cannot be faulted, with Ryder beginning the movie in a role akin to light comedy and crescendoing to a triumphant end worthy of an Oscar. --Doug Thomas Review: Classic story, favorite movie version! - My favorite version of Little Women! It somehow seems to fit my version of the March family (and Laurie! And Professor Bhaer!) better than any other. The casting is superb and the script and character development, just right. I own it on disk, but these days it's just easier to stream, so I often come back to it here. If you like period stories with a sweet wholesome story-line, and you appreciate that this is a great American novel brought to life, you'll enjoy. Review: I love the movie - Ill never forget being gifted the book by a great favorite middle school teacher of mine Mrs. Collaway! Great movie I wonder what disease afterwards the sister beth came down with I kind of watched it in like two different day settings and not like full out. I know the first one was the forgot the name but was a high fever like flu today but back in that day they had no....but It was a blessing her mom had the skills to pull her through that. i remember reading in high school about it I just forget what they called that disease fever she got. I believed it was passed on by that family she was helping and feeding from touching that baby who may have given her it. But before she died I loved her statement a lot. Like I think she was never like the outspoken and brave one like the others but heading to death and heaven it showed she always were, but she never took to be and do so in any of her dreams. I mean she loved the piano and was talented with that so she didnt dream you know.....where Im going with that. Like all of them had talents even the mother! Especially, not being a single mother but raising them she was due to him being off in the war fighting like most fathers and uncles did back in the day. I forgot how young the youngest one was and when I didnt watch it all in one setting in one day the next day im like who is that and Im like duhhhh I completely forgot ha.... I love how Joe knew she liked the one guy from her childhood she didnt love him and was willing to say no to being asked to be wed to him. Thats was deep becasue I thought she did and that was going to happen. I also love what happened to him and the young sister and I thought negatively how now a-day movies turn out with jealousy and in this movie and time frame just showed how much positively things were back then with family and sibling in the family. Her sister who really liked him was not jealous that her sister married her childhood great best guy friend. I just thought that was awesome!!! I wasnt trying to think negatively but due to how movies are and how the world and family are now with jealousy thats why I was thinking that she was about to be mad and jealous of her own sister due to that. For the daughter who had the baby and sister I forgot her name ha having twins with no good meds back then she sure didnt seem too much in pain ha forreal. Ha her remarks told the story but not the pain. During slavery movies and very old movies it showed how much painful having a baby with no meds were and all of them I could just feel how bad it was with no pain and even with never having kids myself. Great movie and classic movies just make you want to dress more proper in life. I do now dress more moderately but I still like you know short shorts and a lil tiny belly showing but I think they look so much better in properness and just you know like idk hard to explain. I just let say would have rather been born then than now because these days you cant show a lil skin and not be targeted as a bad person or wanted sex or so forth. I understand the two show different messages but my type of style I do not even want sex nor attention. Esp as a virgin.

The best version, great to watch along with/before the book
Love this movie! It's the best version I've seen, and directly quotes the book several times. It's nice to go back to that wholesome entertainment without the funky stuff you don't need. Great for all ages, but my middle/high school kids liked it most because they understand the historical context of a family in a war. We watched it before reading the book so that they can get these great characters in their mind before diving into the more difficult text (more robust English than we speak ;) ). Highly recommend!

A modernized adaptation of the classic novel, yet a gem nonetheless!
If you're a purist, you'll probably scoff at this 1994 movie adaptation of the classic novel by Louisa May Alcott. It is not a faithful adaptation, and a rather modernized version. But having said that, I love this adaptation all the same because of the wonderful acting by the ensemble cast. The movie tells the story of a New England family during the Civil War - there's Marmie [Susan Sarandon, my favorite Marmie of all the adaptations],Meg, Jo [Winona Ryder who actually really shines in this role], Beth [Claire Danes], and Amy. Dad is a Union Army Chaplain and away on the battleground and so the band of women fend for themselves. Their lack of material comforts is never seen as much of a problem [they portray a once-prosperous family fallen on hard times] and then there's next door neighbor Laurie [an utterly charming Christian Bale]who becomes infatuated with the strong-willed Jo. The acting is this movie adaptation is perhaps one of the finest if taken as an ensemble performance - all the actors shine in their roles, especially Sarandon as Marmie, Ryder as Jo, Danes as the ethereal and fragile Beth, Bale as Laurie, and of course, Gabriel Byrne as Prof. Bhaer. The sets, costumes and cinematography are absolutely beautiful and so is the beguiling score. I make it a point to watch the movie adaptations of Little Women once a year - these movies just make me feel good and happy, especially during the holidays. Highly recommended to fans of Little Women and period dramas.

A Favorite Film Edition of an American Classic
Film historians may want to begin with a viewing of the 1933 black-and-white version of this American classic which stars Katherine Hepburn as the liberated (for her times) sister, Jo. For pure enjoyment, the 1994 color version starring Winona Ryder as Jo cannot be beat. (Ryder received an Oscar nomination as Best Actress for her portrayal of Jo.) The integration of story, scenery or cinematography, set decoration, acting, and beautiful music is first rate. This version was advertised as the best family film in the year of its release and the assessment is surely correct and accurate. This is a film the entire family can enjoy. There are so many extensions for children to explore after watching the very entertaining movie. With parents, they can research New England life in Victorian times, the Civil War, classic American novels, and much, much more. This is definitely the best family-focused version of "Little Women." Occasionally, it can be purchased at an Amazon bargain rate. I only paid $5 for my DVD copy. Great family viewing!

I have had this movie on VHS for years and finally replaced it with the DVD. I love the fact that not only can I watch this movie with subtitles but there are extras after the movie as well as director comments on the whole movie. The price was right, too.
