I don't know the answer, but I can speak to how well it is made. I have been using it for a while now and it is much better quality than I thought it would be when I ordered it. A very handy item and very useful with the eye in the handle. I highly recommend it.

is this the appropriate replacement for the set that comes with the rigging knife in sheath? in other words, will it fit in the sheath I have?

This marlin spike is too long for a folding rigging knife sheath, if that is to which you are referring. If you dig deeper in the Amazon or the Myerchin web site, you will file that there is a high quality leather sheath specifically for this spike. Both spike ad sheath also are sold as a combo. If you want a sheath, that is what you want. I have the combo, and I put a braided cord monkey fist dongle through the slot in the end of the spike for ease of access and handling, plus to prevent loss.

Is the eye in the end for whipping?

Short answer: YES; including knot tying, splicing, and sewing and other aspects of marlinespike seamanship. This tapered tool is polished, ~7 inches long and ~5/8 inch outside width surrounding the ~3/4 inch long eye. A good handful and very much "fit for purpose and use".
