Sketching from the Imagination: Characters

This book has been wonderfully inspirational with a large collection of different perspectives and styles. Each artist covered tells you a bit of their history, sources of inspiration, materials they use and their particular techniques for working. Sprinkled throughout are little passages of advice that one can go back to again and again. The styles of artists cover a great variety, everything from the horrific, to the goofy, comic and beautiful. They include architecture drawings as well as creatures and people. This book, along with the, 'Fantasy," version have really had a great effect on my own work and have led me to be more greatly excited and productive. I keep these books in the bathroom so that whenever I am there I can go back and find more and more reasons to keep working. These books have been a great find.

So when i bought this i thought it was going to be a book that was going to help me draw better by giving me tips and tricks. In a way it did but not the way i expected it too. This book is a compilation of other artist and the way they make their characters. They give a sense of background, they explain their inspirations and ideas, what materials they use, and how they start or do their sketching and their techniques. It also shows some of their sketches. Overall i really did like reading/looking at this book it a nice way to look at other artist, looking at their styles and how they got their ideas.

THIS BOOK IS AMAZING!!! it's a trove of inspiration if you're an illustrator, animator, concept artist, or character designer, illustrative art appreciator, etc. totally should be on the list for essentials in art school, or just something to browse when you're art-blocked. I LOVE it!!

AMAZING purchase. Worth every penny. HUGE variety, beautiful works from dozens upon dozens of artists; jam-packed with high quality color images of their concept sketches, and personal accounts of what their drawing process/brainstorming processes are, so you get a huge breadth of advice. Any fiction illustrator needs to own this book. It’s over 300 pages.

I thought i wrote a review on this already, but i don't see it. I have purchased 4 of these books (Characters, Sci-fi, Fantasy, and Creative Drawing). As a newer artist myself (just as a hobby), i find these to be full of inspiration. Not only it is inspiring to flip though the sketches and see the artwork, but reading about each artist and their process, or tips they share, is insightful. I didn't give it 5 stars because like someone else mentioned the quality of the paper is not great so i don't know if they will last over a long period of time. But if you want to be exposed to other artists out there and get all inspired to make art yourself, this is for you!

The artists showcased in this huge volume are a great melange of ideas and inspiration. Buy it!

My new favorite book. Not a how to book more so a inspirational art book Filled with lots of great character drawings. And notes by the artists.

Book is well illustrated and a good reference for comic artists and general illustrators.

Ich besitze mittlerweile mehrere Bücher dieser Serie und bin immer wieder fasziniert von den unterschiedlichen Stilen der Künstlern. Es ist sehr interessant nachzulesen welche Materialien und Techniken verwendet werden. Hier finde ich außerdem immer wieder Inspiration beim Durchblättern für eigene Projekte oder probiere auch mal andere Sachen aus.

50 artistas en 300 hojas con 50 estilos distintos de diseñar personajes. Es un brainstorming magnifico para sacar ideas, ver trazos muy diferentes y darte cuenta de la variedad de opciones de diseño que hay para crear personajes con personalidad que te dejen atrapado en una hoja o en una pantalla... Personalmente junto con el de sci-fi es el que mas me gusta de los cuatro que tengo. Y que nadie se lleve a engaño, si lo que quieres es un libro-tutorial que te enseñe a dibujar characters este no es tu libro.

Acquistato come usato ma in ottime condizioni. Manuale molto utile per vedere diversi stili d’illustrazione del genere.

This includes their work methods, what inspires them, art materials they use, and valuable tips and experiences. The book is full of art and progressive sketches. Pages are of superior quality and the book is thick. It's a must have for art inspiration and motivation for all artists. Yes, it's expensive but well worth every penny.
