Aside from the space for the king mattress, make sure you consider the space taken up by the padded siderails and the padded wings of the headboard - easily adding another 2 - 2.5" to each side. That being said, I am enjoying the bed. It was super easy to assemble (comes with all the required hardware/tools). It arrived in 2 large boxes ...on a pallet. The delivery guy left the pallet (bonus!!) and the 2 boxes where we asked him to - just make sure you have someone to help. We had to unbox it in the driveway and then bring the pieces in to assemble. There is the "manufacturing' smell but I'm hoping that goes away soon. All in all, I am pleased with the purchase. Please note, the color is darker than it looks on the computer or in previous reviews. If I had to describe it, I would say it's more like the 'Black, Text 1, Lighter 35%' font shade in MS Office 2013 (Second row, 2nd from the top).
