When you hear the struggle and chug of the motor cycling the finer particles around you'll experience a loss of suction. I reuse these filters by either stepping outside and firmly beating it against a step or hard surface. I also employ several Q-tips to run along the ribs of it and loosen dirt. I've even vacuumed it with my big vacuum, chuckling about the irony. Remember not to empty your canister in your house if you can at all avoid it. You're just sprinkling the contamination elsewhere! The filters, while working well, are poorly designed. Here's what I mean: as you can see in the photo, the filter comes in two parts, a mesh screen and a thick accordion filter. The screen can be washed in warm soapy water and likely would last for a good time. The white filter, however, cannot be washed. All you can do is wipe it clean and that leaves something to be desired. I suppose that, if I was only using this thing on pet hair and spots, it might be fine. But the vacuum is such a little powerhouse that I've also used it to vacuum drapes, upholstery and crevices. Lots of fine dust, which seems to breed in my house.
