When VOGURTIME Snowflake Shaped DIY kit is assembled a preprogrammed MCU controls 18 blue and 6 orange LEDs in 6 fancy patterns imitating animation. With only one button it is possible to turn the kit ON and OFF and also play all 6 animation effects in loop - or continuously play the same animation. The button function: Short press: next animation effect (or turn ON if in sleep mode); Double press: change playing state (loop play or fixed play); Long press: go to sleep mode. The kit consists of two high quality double printed circuit boards with the sharp contrast part markings. A delicate MCU is already soldered, LEDs and other surface mounted devices have to be soldered by the user. Thanks to high quality boards, pre-tinned surfaces, and well-suited instructions the soldering task is easy. You shouldn't be afraid of working with SMD parts: they are rather big and only few; you should start with just one contact and adjust the SMD position as needed. Only when you are happy continue soldering next contact. The same is true with the linear voltage regulator, there you should start with the wide contact. Attached instructions are printed on quality paper with color pictures. There is an email address where you can get detailed instructions. Despite not needing them I asked for support: a comprehensive instruction in pdf format was sent promptly the next day. The kit could be powered from 2 AAA batteries, the battery holder is included. I prefer powering it from a 9V power adapter with a matching barrel connector I already have. Powering with included cable is intended for an ubiquitous USB power source - any will work because current consumption is on average below 0.1A. Grandchildren liked participating in assembly and then playing with it; they intended to place it under Christmas tree. In conclusion: I highly recommend the product and I am confident your kids will like it. For me this is a third DIY kit from VOGURTIME. All of them have good documentation, high quality parts, always complete (sometimes spare parts are added like here LEDs and SMD resistor) , and shipped in protective packaging. Also, still functional. So for me VOGURTIME is a reputable brand.

I got this for soldering practice for my son and I. They are well made and easy to put together. We had several family members request them, so we bought more for them. Fun project for the holidays!

Fun little flashing snowflake. Dont install the leds on the same side as the microcontroller like I did on my first one, it will still work just backwards. The small smd parts aren't to bad except for the resistor. A bigger resistor would have been really nice. I wouldn't recommend this for a complete beginner due to the small smd stuff, they take a bit of experience. Buy a few and some different colors of LEDs and make a few different ones.

Theses were sweet projects for our grandkids to work on. (One is a natural at these kinds of projects and the other is not, but both assembled their snowflakes successfully.) The results are awesome. The flakes toggle through several different light displays. Ended up ordering another set so we could have a couple for our own house.

I bought some of these for my students learning how to solder. It is not really easy, but cool if done properly. The kids who were successful loved it.

I got this to show my kid how to solder, although it did help this kit has microscopic components that are near impossible to work with at home.

Novelty gift, not educational project. I have basic craft experience and the tiny parts were insufferable, this proect is for experienced soldering students, my 12 y.o. granddaughter who is very crafty, managed to get thru soldering the circuit board after about an hour of one on one instruction from me, but we got weary, and we came back to finish the soldering the led bulbs on the other circuit board on another day. Larger parts and more educational instructions would have been nice. I would pay more for the project, if it was kid tested and kid approved.

Bought as a Christmas gift for my kids. Made small soldering projects a stocking stuffer tradition and they really enjoyed this one. Had all components present and was easy to assemble but still had enough challenge to be fun.
