I've used it on hard ground, while hitting big rocks under, no bends, no breaks. **Q: what is the difference between a garden trowel and a spade** A: Dear Ms. Benson,Usually a garden trowel has what I think of as a "traditional" shovel shape, and is held in one hand. A spade (at least the ones I've used) has a full-sized handle (meaning if the blade is resting on the ground the handle comes up to a height somewhere between your belly and chest) and rather than coming to a point - the end of the blade is straight (square). I use a trowel to dig small holes and I use a spade when I want a straight edge instead of a point (cutting out squares of sod, for example).
