Is the heavier lube really worth it? It seems the heavier lube would gunk up faster.** A: Yeah, there's a bit of truth in that. It does gunk up a bit more/faster. However, it also stays in place better. It depends on what your application(s) are for it, but the hotter or more friction-y the area, the more good the thicker stuff will do for you. The EWL30 is too gunky for an AR bolt carrier group. But I like a couple of small drops of it on Glock slide rails. When I first got it I was using it for everything, but I gradually scaled it back. Nowadays I mostly use it on other things, such as knives, door hinges, various home projects, etc. I've moved back to lighter lubricating products on my guns. Except that, as noted, I do like the EWL on pistol slides. I also use it on my M1 Garand, where it's actually very useful. So overall, I don't think there's a 100 % clear answer to your question, but you could probably do without it if you have other, lighter duty lubricants that work for you. I use Fireclean for about 90 % of my gun cleaning needs now.
