After the worldwide success of William Friedkin' s 1973 classic film The Exorcist, those wacky Turks decided that maybe they should steal the script and make their own homegrown version of the film. The result is Seytan, a one-of-a-kind viewing experience. If you' ve seen the 1973 original you' ll feel you' re experiencing déjàvu as this version is almost an identical scene by scene remake of The Exorcist, albeit with a Turkish soundtrack, music recorded directly off a record player, editing most likely done by a blind monkey and special effects more fitting for an elementary school play. Review: Delightfully atrociously awful fun. Very grainy though. - This is 5 stars on the "Plan 9" scale: movies so bad, they are good. However, I have to give it 1 star for video quality, very poor transfer but considering this movie was hard to find for years, beggars can't be choosers. Like others have mentioned, the film is yellow for the first 20 minutes or so. The Exorcist is my favorite movie of all time so even though this is a rip-off, it's so horribly pathetic, that it's enjoyable. Also fun are the subtitles, at one point the translator gave up being serious. My version does not have an English dub, so reading is required. If you like having Bad Movie Nights with friends, this is a perfect choice. Review: Perfect send-up to the original - Stay away if you don't like odd foreign subtitled films. However, if you liked the original Exorcist or are a horror fan you'll like this off-beat sendup. On par with 'Dracula in Istanbul,' you'll dig this. Although about half-way through the movie there is a snippet from the opening of Emerson Lake and Palmer's 'Endless Enigma that blew my mind. The spot on action takes you along just like the original. Seytan is practically similar to the Exorcist but is a very low budget Turkish production with plenty of merit. Seytan reflects the modern Islamic cultural interpretation in dealing with the supernatural or the devil. There were some creepy scenes and some laugh out loud bad moments that were priceless. What I liked about this film is that the Turks did this film their way but stayed true to the spirit of the story. Highly recommend. Poorly edited, with rudimentary dialogue and special effects, it is a travesty of the original Hollywood version. By comparison with this effort, Edward D. Wood jnr., PLAN NINE FROM OUTER SPACE - generally accepted to be one of the worst films of all time - is a masterpiece.
