Are these really oak color ?

These are a very light wood color. I would call them more of a birch color than oak.

Can you sand and stain them another color?

Yes, easy. I am not sure you would even need to send them if you go for a darker look. If you want something lighter though, it might be a problem. They have a rough surface, not sure if the underlying layer is lighter.

The chairs I ordered were not ladderback but French country style as shown in the corresponding picture to the request.

Are all 6 chairs in one box when shipped?
