Can I operate the remote control of my satellite receiver from the location of the TV in another room?

this item needs line of sight so don’t think it works too well through walls

currently using an older laptop with a vga port as mine broke, will this work with a VGA to hdmi adapter?

Should work with anything that works OK with an HDMI wire, so if the laptop connects OK with the adapter & an HDMI wire, should work with this.
