Do these work well on wood furniture (e.g. drawers, shelves)? Any residue?

They left a lot of residue on wood. (I tried using them on the bottoms of wood bowls that my husband makes and we sell. They left enough residue that he had to sand the bottoms and refinish, which made them unacceptable for our purposes. They even left residue on glass.) I recommend using Post-It brand labels -- they're more expensive, but they are far more removeable without residue.

Why are these almost 3 times as expensive as Avery 5436 removable labels in the same size that gives you 4 times as many labels (250)? Difference is ?

Honestly, the Avery 5436 Removable Labels is in every way better than this label. The only reason I can think of why it is market to this price is because it is not an Add-On Program item. The Add-On program allows you to buy this item at low price if you've already have $25 or more of item in your cart. Avery 5436 is part of that program and this one is not. Amazon must have take into account of their shipping cost and profit, just guessing. Do these work on fabric?

No, These labels are not intended for fabric and if that is what you are planning to use them for, I would not purchase them if I was you

how well do they work on CD holders?

Though I use these to label bottles etc in the kitchen, I did an experiment on the CD holder and they stuck on fine. A nice attribute is that they can peel off should you want to re-label.
