What voltage are the Tx/Rx pins? It looks like you might be able to change to 3.3 or 5.0

There are 3.3 volt and 5 volt pins. But these are for supply output from USB to your board, not a select-able Rx/Tx voltage. The chip is a 3.3 volt chip with a build in regulator. So one must assume that the TX/Rx outputs are 3.3 v. But the datasheet does not explicitly state this. I would consider a voltage divider for incoming 5 volt TTL.

Try a lower baud baud rate. Usually “trash” output means the baud rate is incorrect.
