Apparently, a failing horn is a common fault with this model, so a direct BMW replacement out of warranty would be pointless and, of course, stupidly expensive for manufacturer parts. So, I went looking around and there are two (easy) options outside of a direct BMW replacement. One option is to buy an aftermarket wiring pigtail, which plugs into the factory wiring and allows any horn with spade connectors to be used. The second easy option is to buy this set of horns that plug directly into the BMW factory wiring. I was apprehensive about whether they would be plug and play because the 2 series is not mentioned on the listing, but I took a chance anyway. I'm afraid that access to the horns (there is one each side) requires each front wheel to be removed to allow the front wheel arch liner to be taken out. I guess you could try to turn the wheel to see if there is enough space. Anyway, as soon as the liner is out of the way, the factory horn is right there and access isn't too bad. I removed the nut on the back of the factory horn and unplugged it. These Hella horns plug straight in although the angles on the plug and horn outlets are not aligned the same as the factory ones these do fit in. The only issue is that the factory fitting is M8 (13mm nut) and these Hella horns are a M6 fitting (10mm nut) but they still bolt up into place. Make sure that the horn does not touch any part of the bodywork, liner or brackets, otherwise you will get a horrible vibration.
