Patients with dysphagia have difficulty swallowing or consuming liquids because of their inability to control the liquid bolus. The SafeStraw provides a limited bolus size by use of a fluid chamber, one way valve, and float. As the patient on the straw, fluid flows through the valve and into the chamber. When the fluid travels through the chamber to the straw, the float rises. After around 6.2ml's the float reaches the top of the chamber closing it off preventing the patient from receiving more fluid. Once they stop sucking, the float sinks to the bottom of the chamber. This break gives them time to control the liquid bolus and safely swallow. Once the float has reached the bottom of the chamber they can safely draw another 6.2ml's of fluid. It can be used multiple times with washing. **Q: The descriptions says straws not included - do you have to buy separate straws for this product?** A: You can attach a disposable straw to it! **Q: Does this include both thin and thick liquid safety straws?** A: The straws are the size of a regular straw that i got and don't allow very much to pass thru. They were frustrating for my husband, so we just take sips and don't use the straw. **Q: can it be used with warm liquid in cup with lid that open/close spout** A: Yes. We assembled this and got it working beautifully. It really helped limit the fluid volume to 5ml. It lasted about 2 days. Then it quit working. No amount of cleaning and reassembly helped. Sometimes the float will catch and control the fluid level. Sometimes it won’t catch and you get unrestricted volume. Sometimes it gets stuck and won’t allow any fluid. The. It got a crack in the side.
