Whittling Handbook [Benson, Peter] on desertcart.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers. Whittling Handbook Review: Great little book for whittling - Mr. Benson has written a nice book on whittling. I purchased this for a Christmas present at another local store but had to get one for myself. I like books that don't require multiple carving tools when teaching young folks to whittle and this one is spot on! Highly recommend it. He gives both metric and imperial measurements when needed, encourages safety, explains in easy to understand language. These are all useful skills for any age. The only thing I personally don't use is olive oil as IMHO and experience it can go rancid. I also like the fact that he often reminds the reader to be careful on wood species chosen for eating and cooking utensils as many spoon carvers I have met don't bother or they use a "safe" wood only to finish it with walnut oil. Mr. Benson even takes the space to remind readers how to cure green wood after carving. There are some suggestions for using small gouges and why fixed blades are safer to use but small knife is good enough for these tasks. He does often encourage the new whittled to use their imagination while giving guidelines! Review: Great book for a beginning whittler - Nice basic whittling book. Great pictures with a lot of really helpful details for the beginner. Some great classic projects also. Highly recommended.

Looks great for beginners
I may give it 5 stars after I get started, but looking through the book only it does appear to be clearly written and provides an historical and personal journey perspective on this hobby. I look forward to starting my own journey in whittling!

Wonderful Book
This book contains excellent projects that are easy enough for a true beginner, but that yield useful items (forks, letter openers, etc.). The instructions are clear and easy to follow, and the author gives great tips and information, obviously from his own vast experience. This is a book for everyone interested in learning an ages-old, historic craft.
