The bestselling Turkish classic of love and loss in a changing world 'A heart-breaker . . . it has the kind of indefinably powerful impact of The Great Gatsby' Observer ‘Deeply moving … transformative … a love story that I actually love’ Elif Shafak 'It is, perhaps, easier to dismiss a man whose face gives no indication of an inner life. And what a pity that is: a dash of curiosity is all it takes to stumble upon treasures we never expected.' A shy young man leaves his home in rural Turkey to learn a trade in 1920s Berlin. The city's crowded streets, thriving arts scene, passionate politics and seedy cabarets provide the backdrop for a chance meeting with a woman, which will haunt him for the rest of his life. Emotionally powerful, intensely atmospheric and touchingly profound, Madonna in a Fur Coat is an unforgettable novel about new beginnings and the unfathomable nature of the human soul. With an introduction by David Selim Sayers ‘You think you know yearning . . . you think you know the fleeting nature of happiness . . . you think you know unrequited love, you think you know lyrical writing . . . and then you read Madonna in a Fur Coat’ Jack Edwards ‘The surprise bestseller ... read, loved and wept over by men and women of all ages’ Guardian Review: A book about love and heartbreak! - Madonna in a Fur Coat by Sabahattin Ali is a quiet, deeply moving novel that lingers long after you finish reading. The story tells us about Raif Efendi, a man whose past reveals a deep, life-changing love in 1920s Berlin. Through his colleague’s eyes, one can see how people are easily misunderstood. Raif Efendi comes across as unremarkable and distant at first. As the story unfolds, you see the depth of his character. His time in 1920s Berlin, and his connection with Maria Puder form the heart of the story. Alongside him is the unnamed narrator, his colleague and friend, who becomes an important aspect in how we understand and see Raif. At first, the narrator thinks of Raif the same way everyone does, but later his perception shifts. This change adds another layer to the story, making the readers more curious about Raif. The portrayal of love makes the book stand out. It shows how two people can feel deeply for each other and still not be destined to be together. There is no clear reason to blame, which makes the story feel even more real. Raif’s journey feels both heartbreaking and enduring, as he carries his past quietly into the rest of his life. This is a story about love, loss, and the silent weight people carry. Review: Melancholic, Deep and Dramatic - if you want to read about isolation, feeling of being misunderstood or unseen, and full blown yearning, go for it!

~ For the Old School Romantics ~
In the realm of books, there are some that I'd shout from the rooftops for everyone to read, and then there are the ones I clutch close to my heart, gatekeep them selfishly, just for myself. Am I odd to feel this way? A few days ago, I saw a post about this book on Instagram. It felt like theft, as though someone ate my favourite piece of chocolate. I know that is irrational of me, it's been ages the book released and many people have read it. Yet, I wanted to keep the experience of reading it within me for a little longer, cocooned in the notion that it was meant just to be mine. It is a story of love and yearning, pure and unadulterated, with the ache of missed opportunities. It's about this quiet guy, Raif, a quiet dreamer who favored the realms of his imagination over the concrete world, falling in love with a woman in a painting. And eventually, with the woman who painted it. I don't know what exactly made me feel so deeply about this one. Was it Raif's peculiarities that made me feel seen, or Maria's reluctance to believe in the possibility of companionship? Perhaps it was Ali's lyrical and introspective prose, each word carefully woven like work of an artisan, that lingered and gave a glimpse of the innermost thoughts and desires of his characters. Maybe it's the surprising shift in gender roles for that time which caught me off-guard. And yes, there's also my affinity towards tragic romances. It's probably all these elements that left me so moved. This book is as special as they come. It makes you yearn for the kind of love and devotion Raif and Maria had. The desire for someone to hold your hand with that kind of tenderness, gazing into your eyes as though they hold the universe's greatest secrets. (I know, that's a bit much, but you get my point) Asking you to share this book would again go against my attempt to gatekeep it but I would ask you to share it with that one person you know who feels the matters of heart a little extra, that one Heer bin Ranjha or Juliet without Romeo. If you happen to fall in that category, please make space for Raif and Maria in your heart❤️

For Anyone Who's trying to get into reading!
I would like to begin with how beautiful I find the minimalistic Penguin (UK) Classics Ed. Covers. I was lucky enough to receive an undamaged product as Amazon has always delivered them quite damaged to me. So I feel absolutely relieved and grateful for the fact and I wish this continues. The delivery associate was also respectful. Now aside from the service, I'd like to talk about the book. This is a Turkish classic written by Sabbhatin Ali, set in the 1920s, in which a Turkish Man (a clerk) falls in love with an Artist in Berlin. I find this a great read for beginners and for people who are just trying to find a short read. It's about 150 pages (excluding the introduction), and I personally relate very much with the main lead here. His thoughts are like mine and our thinking process are quite similar. So I can say that I liked this book. It's in easy language, pretty readable and is set for an affordable price. I highly recommend this.
