Oil is caught in the top and drains into the cavity underneath and then can be emptied out through the spout on the side which also has a lid. But the hole in the center is very small and I had some overflow issues with the second oil change I used this item for. The hole underneath needs to be opened more to function properly. Also very important for the yellow air hole to be open while oil is draining from car to pan. **Q: I lost my center plug and the vent cap as well.
