What kind of bucket must one have to mount the wringer to? size, shape, metal? would it work on a round bucket or would the bucket have to be squar

I have successfully mounted mine to a large plastic bucket, and several sizes of metal tub. The brackets swivel, so it's easy to adjust them. The wringer is heavy though, so whatever you use should be sturdy in order to prevent collapse. The brackets are wide enough to mount to a board though, if you wanted to build or already have a stand. Hope this helps!

Can the clamps be repositioned closer together and/or on their sides to clamp to horizontal surfaces too?

The clamps rotate 360 degrees but are fastened to the edges of wringer so they cannot be made closer together.
