After some research into potential solutions, I purchased this tool. This dematting tool is extremely well made and engineered. A similar but a smaller one-sided version at a national pet store, Petsmart, was priced at $51.99. I was unsure whether Buddy would allow me to use this on him or that it would irritate or hurt him. Not only did Buddy allowed me to use this by using his regular brush and this tool alternatively, after a lengthy patient brushing, this tool resolved his matted back. It has now become an at least nightly routine where he comes up on the couch to be brushed with this tool. He now prefers this tool to his regular nylon brush.
