Not opened yet but due to a change of mattress plans, the mattress will only be 20cm deep and I ordered the 40cm deep cover. Any idea if it will fit?

I have a 10 inch mattress, so that is 25cm and I have 20cm and 40cm and both fit the mattress just fine, so you should be ok.

Does this make the mattress more comfortable with padding, or is it purely for protection?

Personally, I find that it makes the mattress a little bit softer and helps you with a good night sleep and also it helps by throwing your own heat back at you
