How do you know if the iphone is using the external mic? There is no indicator.

You don't. In fact I couldn't tell any difference between using the iPhone mic and when using the Rode.

How do i connect the microphone to my ipad pro? Or does it have to connect with iphone?

It would depend what connector your iPad Pro has, Rode should really have named this iOS lightning edition as that’s the connector used for the Mic. There is a USB-C version available that I’m pretty sure would work with the newer iPads.
