I live in rural Arkansas and have two medium sized female Heeler mixes (Winnie and Roo) that have a tendency to run off on occasional "adventures" that sometimes last over night. Other than that bad habit, these are model dogs -- very obedient, compliant, and amenable to training (I have them trained to heel, sit, halt, speak, fetch, stay, etc). So I thought this would be the perfect solution. It was -- for one of the dogs. For the smaller female (Winnie) it was a disaster. I fenced off about an acre (corresponding to the cleared area around our house in the woods) and hooked everything up. I took Winnie out and followed the training regimen. I set the collar for #2 (out of 9). When she got "stimulated" you would have thought her leg had been amputated. I turned the collar down to #1 and took her to another part of the yard. Same reaction. Thereafter she just lay on the ground and would not go anywhere at all. I took her inside. I took dog #2 (Roo) out for an identical training session. Set the collar at #1. Got absolutely no reaction out of her until I turned the stimulation up to around 4.5 and then it was just a short "yip" and a look at me (after she had retreated) that said "what on earth was that?". But no fear or cringing and in fact after only two "stimulations" she was already beginning to pick up the idea that going near the flags was not a good idea and that the pager vibration was not a good sign (as I said, smart, trainable and eager to please dogs these are). But no big deal, to her anyway. Back to dog #1. Winnie would not come outside for the rest of the afternoon and when I finally did get her to go out to do her business that evening she was definitely fearful and apprehensive. And this was at least 100 yards away from the flag barrier. So I disconnected everything, took out the flags, and with some coaxing got her to go out the next morning. By that afternoon and evening she was fine and back to her old, if somewhat sensitive, self. And I really wanted this to work because now we have to keep much closer tabs on these two so they don't go running off into the Ouchita National Forest (coyotes, bears, snakes, hunters, logging trucks) for a night of adventures. I am not dissing the product at all. I know people (my brother in suburban Chicago is one) that have used these with great success and no ill effects on their dogs. But it's just not for all dogs as my experience with sensitive Winnie showed me. So please, do yourself and your dog a favor and do some research. It will probably work well for 9 out of 10 dogs but you may have the 1 in 10 canine that this is not meant for. In Winnie's case, I strongly feel that continuing the training with the fence would probably have caused a long lasting and difficult to correct negative personality change.
